  1. I quoted what he said above, because I would like to add to it. Combined with Batch Icon Extractor + WinRar, you can rar CCleaner to 1/2 or 1/3 the normal size. Long story short, use Batch Icon Extractor to grab the icon & SFX capabilities of Rar. You can make 2 or 3 times more files fit on a flash drive! P.S. The great thing is that RAR SFX auto cleanup after the file is closed & can be set to dump to the system temp dir (for speed) rather than having to run on the flash drive itself.
  2. I agree. It is confusing. Especially for newcomers to the site. Perhaps they can make 2 buttons of equal size, & label one for download (freeware) & the other for Priority Support (Payware)? Just my 2 cents. Let me hear the heat!
  3. Isn't there an easier way? What happens if you run CCleaner in Windows 7 & checkmark that box. Then save the settings to .ini & open it on XP... Perhaps this can easily be done via a Flash Drive. Will it retain the settings for XP?
  4. Funny, I didn't see that before! I was dragging files to add instead of clicking the button! Thanks! Your my hero for today. Yipppppeeee!!!
  5. CCleaner would have to be an installation tracker for this to happen. CCleaner is just a junk files cleaner, not an install tracker. I don't really know if they will add this, due to the fact that it would have to exactly trace every file & reg key dumped to a text file of some sort in order to "remember" what to remove.
  6. I don't think he is referring to Windows API at all. I think he is meaning that to do a whole disk defrag may shorten a drive more so than just defragging a drive (say to 95%) & stopping. Or perhaps simply having the option to leave X% fragments so that the drive lasts longer. He just wants it to do an incomplete defrag, since hey, no drive is ever 100% defragged & consolidated at one time, right? I may be wrong, but I think this is what he is thinking.
  7. I hate how certain programs, such as AVG, insist on re-applying their icons back onto the desktop or start menu (usually after an update) as part of their state restore program! As it currently stands, I can add the AVG desktop icon to delete, & I can drag the folder to be deleted from the start menu as well. Trouble is, this just clears the folder contents & leaves a blank AVG folder in the start menu instead. Any way to just simply add the ability to delete the entire folder? I would be stupid to empty the entire contents of the start menu just to erase that empty folder. There are other locations/files that may behave similarly as well. Could we have the ability to delete folders in CCleaner as well? I am sure the ability to empty folders & to delete files is nice, but really, what can you do if you can't get rid of trash folders altogether? Thanks!
  8. I noted that during a defrag, it sometimes happens that Defraggler appears to be reading from the same data block that it is writing to. This can be very confusing, because the Yellow block always will layer on top of the Green block, causing it to appear that there isn't anything anything being written... Perhaps you can make it a default in Defraggler that if Yellow is on the same block as Green, that Green is always the dominant color, not yellow? Oh, wait, sometimes it is doing a read & write from a single block. So why not just do it a blended color that shows a color in between green & yellow? Or use a blinking icon that alternates between green & yellow for these occasions? I could be wrong on this, but it appears to be happening on defrags here. If anyone else knows or agrees, just post what you know here!
  9. CCleaner did that to me too. It is confusing the first time you run it. But I love the way CCleaner is now. Having the OK box would be a pain after getting used to it. If this is added, perhaps just add it as an option for newbies to activate, but let advanced users opt out. Thanks!
  10. Thank goodness for the option to NOT backup registry changes to a PC. Sometimes, you are only testing & don't need it. Is there a way to add an option within CCleaner options to Auto-Save registry changes by default? Probably, the best location may be something like My Documents\CC-Registry... This way, you can get rid of the annoying prompt to backup, while ensuring a backup is always made! I love CCleaner but I would love to be able to autobackup the registry entries without having to have a prompt every time, or else no prompt but no backup! I suggested adding the CC-Registry folder, because simply dumping registry backups to the My Documents doesn't help keep a computer clean. Do you realize what it is like to work on a PC with hundreds of such backups in the folder? Well, just my 2 cents worth. Holler at me & let me know if you would + or - the idea. Love hearing input. Thank you!
  11. This would definitely be great. Why defrag trash? But some here feel that it would cause other issues... Best luck!
  12. So, long story short, you want: - Large system files (pagefile/hiberfile/sys volume etc.) to be excluded from the defrag report by default (but adv users can defrag it if desired) - Files grouped by default in a predefined defrag mask that sets 4k clusters (or some other predefined cluster set) to optimize defrag. Right?
  13. While interesting to know, I am even more interested in other factors that come into play, such as... Would it really matter on a high end PC, or are you running lower or mid level PC's? (Slower pc's) When run on SSD drives, does it really matter? Would be interested in knowing how interleave affects high-end machines, or SSD based machines.
  14. Defraggler has a wonderful quick defrag option to eliminated hours of waiting for a full defrag... Why not include a quick free space option as well? * The drive can just try a "quick consolidate" instead of a full file/folder consolidate so that a user doesn't waste hours waiting for their drive to have X amount of contiguous free space. This will eliminate a lot of unnecessary wear on drives, which will extend the lifespan of them. Just like people have many situations they use quick defrag on, there are many that I wish I had quick consolidate! * Let me know what you think, but I would love this!
  15. I would check to see if you have a rootkit infection. I have seen similar things happen on systems infected with TDSS rootkits. To remove AVG so you can install the new one, you may have to download the AVG uninstaller program they produce & run it. The TDSS rootkit may be removed by malwarebytes with updated definitions, or ComboFix. It may go by Alureon, TDSS, or TDL3. It may be a good idea to check your system hosts file for hijackers as well. Take a look here before beginning to get an idea of some good tips: -> http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=20214 * If you have trouble running things in Windows, it may be a good idea to press F8 key right after power on till safe mode options come up, & run your malware removal programs from there. Selecting with networking will give you internet access so your anti-malware programs can update before launching.
  16. It has been a while since I have used FAT 32. If it bothers you too badly, you could use FAT32, I assume. I am not 100% for certain on this, & NTFS offers greater file sizes/stability as opposed to FAT32 from my understanding...
  17. DisKeeper should not be interfering. I am not certain exactly why this occurs, but would you be able to provide more information? For instance, perhaps give the versions of each item below - Operating System - Service Pack - Defraggler Thanks!
  18. Nergal, as far as I know, you are correct. When I last checked the files being defragged on boot time, it seemed only a few files were being defragged. On further inspection, it appeared to be files that were normally locked. This is why it only takes seconds, because it is only a few files being defragged. * I do not know if this includes system restore points, because I have them off at the moment while I test a few things.
  19. Since you like 98SE defragger, have you tried using Win ME defragger in 98? Or, have you tried simply downloading the Win ME defrag utility & launch it in XP to defrag your drive without having to boot into Bart PE? Have heard that Win ME defrag util was about 2 times faster, & doesn't complain as badly as 98 does on disk activity. Let me know!
  20. Wait, wait, wait, man! What do you mean? Defragged? Do you mean using Windows defragger, or Defraggler?
  21. I got it mixed up, Hazel. Info updated. Thanks!
  22. Duplicate files cleaner is not something they would want to add. Here is why: CCleaner is safe to run. But if they added a duplicate files cleaner, the integrity of CCleaner would be compromised. Meaning, that while advanced users know enough they may avoid deleting duplicate "setup.exe" for example, that are NOT really duplicates but merely have the same name/download date etc, other users would not know & end up deleting critical files! In addition, some files may appear to be duplicated, but may be the result of being listed once in the system 32 files folder, & another time in the system repair options! This is the main reason they do not add it, simply because it would absolutely destroy the good ratings that CCleaner has because of the people who are just beginning in computers who do not have the advanced knowledge yet. The integration, well, you might can try another program for now... Try the portable version of PStart to let you run things from your flash drive on a "start menu" style launcher. Hope this helps! Don P.S. I do like the integration idea though, & I personally would like it if they had an option for downloading that, but they are busy, so I don't know if they would consider that for now.
  23. Run CCleaner like this. -> CCleaner.exe /AUTO /SHUTDOWN _______________________________ CCleaner runs silently and automatically, using the current set of saved options to clean the PC. Windows then shuts down automatically. Note: You cannot run /SHUTDOWN by itself. It must be preceded by /AUTO _______________________________ P.S. Try creating a shortcut to CCleaner that will do what you want. Right-click a blank desktop area, then choose New/Shortcut & paste in %programfiles%\CCleaner\CCleaner.exe /AUTO /SHUTDOWN Click next & accept the default name CCleaner. Right-click the new shortcut & rename it Clean and Shutdown (Or something easy for you to remember) * Let us know if this works for you. I tried the AUTO in a shortcut & it works. Haven't tried the shutdown shortcut, but I imagine it will work too.
  24. Context menus can grow very long, trash your computer with lots of junk registry files. The following lists the common shell menu locations for all files & folders: ___________________________________________________________________________ HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AllFileSystemObjects\ShellEx __________________________________________________________________________ Items specific to folders: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers _________________________________________________________________________ It could be listed under tools just like uninstall & startup are. Perhaps listed as: - Context Menu The option to disable or delete (Just like startup handler) would be awesome! + me up, or digg me down, lol. What do you all think?
