So, just doing my usual "every 2 or 3 years" bump of this request. After many, many years with Recuva, these are still my main wish-list items that I don't think would be that difficult to implement. I'm not asking for much here. :-) In any case I missed it, do we have any of these yet? Here's the quick summary: 1. Ability to filter out any images from the Thumbnail view that can't show an image (i.e. that show "No Preview Available"). 2. Ability to pre-load all of the thumbnails instead of just the visible page. 3. Ability to save or modify a custom filter -- even if it is just a registry hack or something. Any of those possible yet?

Just wanted to bump this up since this wish-list from years ago is still my top wish-list that I think would be a good enhancement to Recuva. And I'd add one more: The ability to save a custom filter. Heck, even if I had to edit the registry or something as a workaround, I'd really love a way to define my own filters for specific extensions that I want to see. Um, yes, I noticed there is a newer version and have upgraded to it now. Are you saying that this is a KNOWN ISSUE with v2.15 through v2.17 then? Or are you just ignoring the issue because I happen to not be running the latest version? I have since upgraded and the scheduled weekly scan will run soon and I'll see if it does it again. I am running Defraggler on a Server 2008R2 box. I have set it up to run scheduled defrags on Sundays. I used the GUI interface to do this, and it created a standard looking Task for it that executes this: C:\Program Files\Defraggler\df64.exe "C:" /ts /user "Administrator" /appPath "C:\Program Files\Defraggler" It seems to work well. However, today I happened to look in the Defraggler folder and found that there are large log files that seem to get created every time the scheduled task runs. They look like this: df64.exe.[2_15_742][2015-02-22_10-21].txt Why are these being created? They range anywhere from 5MB to 40MB in size (so I've got like 1.5GB of them total). Do scheduled task versions of Defraggler always create these? Or only when there is an error or other problem? I'm trying to determine if I can just ignore/delete them. Or if they mean something more (i.e. a problem) that I should look into. - John...

Actually, my guess is that this is instead related to the problem with recent versions of Recuva and "virtual" drive letters. Are you SURE that it doesn't show up as a drive letter? Look and see if it does. If it DOES give it a drive letter, but Recuva still does not see it -- then this is a KNOWN PROBLEM WITH RECUVA. Try finding and installing Recuva v1.49.1019 instead of the latest versions. It sees virtual drive letters (such as those from camera devices and/or ImDisk mounted drives) just fine. Well, I'm going to have to disagree with you. If I'm looking at the Thumbnail view, there is very often a very large percentage of images with "no preview available." I don't care if there MIGHT be a SMALL chance of recovering those -- I wouldn't be using the Thumbnail view to do it! If I'm in Thumbnail view, then I'm clearly just trying to do a quick overview of all of the images to see what might be there. Therefore, it makes logical sense to have a "hide images with no preview available" when I am in Thumbnail mode so I don't have to scroll past what is often just pages and pages and pages of "no preview available" blank spots. So, excluding pictures that don't have previews doesn't really eliminate valid recoverable pictures as you suggest. Because normal people wouldn't be using Thumbnail view to find those ones, of course. I still think it is a very reasonable option. Also, your answer to #2 makes no sense. The application already supports scrolling while pictures are being loaded on the CURRENT view. Therefore, there is no reason that it wouldn't support scrolling while it CONTINUES to load images below the current view! So, there would be no need to "wait for all 50 or 60 thousand previews to be loaded before seeing any at all." It's clearly a separate thread already. I just want it to keep loading below my current view. Again, it wouldn't stop be from immediately looking at the currently visible images at all -- since this is clearly already possible (loading and viewing at the same time). And, finally, no, I did not suggest an option to see the full pic in #3. I suggested an option to allow different thumbnail sizes for ALL of the thumbnails (i.e. like Windows does not with their different thumbnail sizes). Just to note it, I just installed the latest version -- v1.51.1063 (64-bit) -- and it still does NOT see virtual disks. I run v1.49.1019 (64-bit) and it sees and scans it just fine. - John...

Based on the fact that I first reported it well over a YEAR ago and it keeps happening, I'm not convinced that the devs will be looking at this as you suggest, sorry. It's a long-known, ongoing problem that simply doesn't get fixed. Or, more accurately, appears to get fixed in one build but then regresses back to broken in the next. Is there a way to specify additional extensions for specific file types in the drop-down box? For example, I'd like .3gp to be in the "Video" type. I know that I can edit it manually and add it to the list, but sometimes I forget. Is there a way (maybe in the registry?) to let us either modify the search for the predefined types or maybe even add our own types? I'd just like them to be readily available all the time -- as opposed to me having to manually do them. Thanks!

Indeed -- this appears to be an ongoing problem. Note that I reported it way back in June of 2013 when I installed v1.47.948. Note that it was working fine with v1.43.623. At the time, they seemed to work in the Wizard. In October of 2013, I posted that it had gotten even worse -- with v1.48.982, it no longer even worked in the Wizard mode! Interestingly, in v1.49.1019, it appeared to work again! I posted so -- and got thanked for letting people know. Then, in January of 2014, it was broken again in v1.50.1036! It seems to jump back and forth. I wanted to confirm that it wasn't just something that I was doing -- so, on 21-Jan-2014, I did a test: I went and found the previous version of Recuva -- v1.49.1019. So, I had the two versions right next to each other -- v1.49 and the latest v1.50 at the time -- both on the same machine (64-bit) and with the same mounted virtual drive. in v1.49, the mounted drive (which I have mapped to "T:") showed up just fine and could be scanned. In v1.50, it simply didn't show it at all. It wasn't an option to pick! Clearly, there is some problem on the Recuva said of things. Sometimes it sees those drives -- sometimes it doesn't! Hopefully, this is corrected in a new version (again). For now, if you really need to do it, try going back to a version known to work with virtual disks (such as v1.49.1019 mentioned above). - John...

These have been mentioned over the past few years by myself and others, but I haven't seen anything recently, so I thought that I'd start a new thread specific to suggestions for the Thumbnail view. This is pretty much all I use Recuva for -- lost photo recovery. So, here's my years-long wish-list: 1. Allow a filter option to remove any images that aren't seen as valid -- where there is "no preview available" -- so that we don't have to see thousands of boxes that say "no preview available" that are pretty worthless in Thumbnail view. (You have an option to "sort by State" which kinda works for this -- except then you lose the ability to sort by anything else meanful. It would be much better if we could just click a box to "hide thumbnails without previews available" to remove the bad "state" ones -- and then still be able to sort by Size and such.) 2. Tell Recuva to go ahead and continue pre-loading images in the Thumbnail View past the page that I am on! I want it to just go ahead and pre-load everything that it can, so that I can QUICKLY page through looking for images that are lost. Right now, you go to the next page, wait for it to load that page of images, then go to the next page, and wait again. I want it to just GO and pre-load ahead so that I can easily page through and view already rendered preview images. That way, I could switch to thumbnail view and just let it process for a few minutes -- and see all of the images quickly. The page-by-page thumbnail loading can be torture when you have a few thousand images to work your way through! 3. It may be nice to be able to select a preview/thumbnail SIZE to see larger previews. Ok -- just to follow up... I wanted to confirm that this was from the Recuva side of things and not something I was doing at my end (i.e. with IMDisk version changes or something). I went and found the previous version of Recuva -- v1.49.1019. Actually, looks like there is a problem again. I'm running the latest version (1.50.1036) and, once again, virtual drives mounted from images (using IMDisk) are not appearing as options to scan. I get this both using the 32-bit version under XP and the 64-bit version under Win7. Seems like every time there is a new build, it switches back and forth between seeing and not seeing virtual disks! - John...

I take it back -- it has actually gotten WORSE in the latest version! I now cannot even scan an ImDisk mounted virtual drive using the Wizard! It shows up as a normal drive and I can select it, but when I try to scan it says that it is an "Invalid drive for scan." Again, this used to work just fine. Why can't I use Recuva on these any more? It is fairly standard practice for me to clone a drive to an image before I do anything with it -- then I work on just the image (mounted with ImDisk). Worked great in v1.43 and before. No longer works. - John...

Any update on this? This just seems like a bug that was introduced or something. Again, the problem is that removable and virtual drives no longer show up in the drive selection dropdown box when you are not using the Wizard. This worked FINE in v1.43.623 and stopped working sometime between there and v1.47.948. They still do NOT show up in the latest version (v1.48.982). Can this be fixed? It's a royal pain. - John...

I was running Recuva v1.43.623 -- and everything seemed to be working fine. When I select a drive in the drop-down list, it would list my physical drives as well as my removable media drive letters and even an ImDisk mounted virtual disk. This is how it has always been and it seemed to work fine showing all of the possible drives. Today, I upgraded to the latest version (v1.47.948) and suddenly only my actual physical disks show up in the drop-down list to select from. None of my removable drives are there nor the ImDisk virtual drive (which where I do most of my recovery from actually -- since I first clone the disk and then use it to recover from just to be safe). I looked for a new option to possible hide/show removable disks from the list, but I don't see it. Am I missing something? Or is this just a bug in the latest build? Thank you! - John

Holy cow! I just got the latest version and noticed that it DOES now have a "sort" option in thumbnail view finally! Not sure when that appeared along the way -- but I thank you for adding it! Scratch #1 off of my list above! And we kinda get #2 since you can "sort by State" -- although, then you can't sort on other things which kinda makes it useless to me. I'd much rather have a on/off/checkbox option for "display/hide 'no preview available'". But, with the sorting by size, it really doesn't matter to me that much. Now if we can just get #3 in there -- so I don't have to wait for each page to load the thumbnails and can instead just let it background load and flip through them quickly, I'll be all set. But, that being said, I said that I'd buy Pro if you did just ONE of the 3 -- and you clearly did! So, I'll stick to my word and be buying Pro within a few days! Thanks! - John...

Any chance that we'd see some changes like these anytime soon? I'd really love to have some better options for the Thumbnail view when looking at images. Things such as: 1. Great suggestions here -- really like most of them! Just to make sure you are aware, you can right-click on the results and quickly change modes without going to Options. Just FYI. Indeed -- my biggest "wish it was better" situation for Recuva is when I am hunting for images in Thumbnail View. I SO wish that sorting worked even when in Thumbnail mode. I really, really want to be able to sort by file SIZE when in Thumbnail View -- I think this would help a lot with being able to quickly ignore fairly worthless images. And some of your suggestions would also help with that (i.e. just filter out all files under a specified size, for example -- or allow me to just hide all files where a thumbnail cannot be generated since there is little point to those files when in Thumbnail View). Indeed -- the dreaded "unable to read boot sector" problem. I wish Recuva could just ignore that and read the entire disk -- ignoring partition information -- looking for possible files. Even if we had to specify some information (i.e. expected file structure and such) to help it along. Sorry I never followed up on this. It actually looks like this option does what I wanted now. Originally, I was under the impression that checking the box to search for non-deleted files meant to look for them IN ADDITION TO the deleted ones -- so that you'd get results that included all deleted and non-deleted files on the disk. I was looking for the option to be so that you would get ONLY the non-deleted files -- and none of the deleted ones. I now believe that IS what that option does now -- can someone confirm that? So, if I don't check that box, I get just the deleted files -- and if I DO check that box, I get JUST the non-deleted ones -- correct? If so, that is what I wanted. Thanks. - John...
