  1. There is more to CCleaner than you see on the surface. You'll want to go ahead and set your prefs again for Google in both browsers. Then use the settings you see here http://www.viclovan.com/Tips/ccleaner_save...ain_cookies.htm. Hopefully that will help. Good luck, Vic
  2. I'm sorry I don't have a solution for this, but if you are trying to make sure you keep your history, have you tried Firefox? The Firefox options for CCleaner will be on the "Applications" tab. I'll bet the the Firefox history is kept and you'll be able to go back to the sites you like. Not to mention that it's safer than IE, unless you have to have IE for some application. Good Luck. Vic
  3. First, don't pass go, go directly to backing up that computer. Anything that is important for you to save or anything you might think may be important, back it up now. Second, let me say that I'm impressed that, that computer is still running, of course I don't know if you've already replaced the hard drive or not. If not, that's really something since the hdd manufacturers really only shoot for a life span of about 5 years. Here is the rule, ALL HARD DRIVES FAIL, it's not a matter of "IF", it's a matter of "WHEN". Third, now that you've done your backups, and now that I'm down off my soap box, I think you're on the right track. But I'll suggest that you give Firefox a try. It's smaller and faster than IE with better security. The one downside to Firefox 2 (version 3 is coming soon), is that it can eat memory (RAM) like nobody's business depending on usage. If you are installing Flash by going to their site and downloading and then running without saving to a folder on your drive before you run it, that also may be a problem. This is one of the problems with IE. In IE you can run executables right from Temporary Internet files/folders. When you go to download Flash and it asks you if you want to "Run" or "Save", choose "Save" and put it into a folder you will remember and maybe even create a folder named Flash so you can find it later. Once the download is finished, open the folder you saved to and then close IE before you start to install. This may solve the issue. If it doesn't, the list of previous versions is listed on the filehippo site under the current version. http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/ I use the "Slim" version found on the other builds page http://www.CCleaner.com/download/builds. I also looked at the Adobe site and found that they have an "Uninstaller" also. You might try running that "Uninstaller" and then try the install. http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/alternates/ Windows 98/ME/2000/XP/Vista Internet Explorer/AOL Netscape/Opera Uninstaller After all of that I'm about out of ideas but it's been a long day. Maybe a few more cups of coffee or a liter or two of Dr. Pepper I'll think of something else. Good luck, Vic
  4. I believe only if he had run CCleaner before he installed the beta, as it would have imported the old history upon install. Firefox is pretty good at that since it's looking for the profile to import and then does so. If he ran CCleaner and then did the upgrade to the install it most likely would have been clear. Also make sure that that history isn't something left over from an ill advised trip using Internet Explorer. The history from IE is imported on the install of FF if you tell it to.
  5. This file is rebuilt by Windows automatically. Once you run the cleaner, reboot and see if it's smaller each time, it should be. If you still want to make sure it's really gone you can use, and use with caution, "Unlocker". This program will give several options for deleting files, including delete on reboot. Please use caution with it since you can delete files that Windows needs to run. Good luck, Vic
  6. No, to the different partition. I have set up one machine where I moved the users "My Documents" to a different partition. All the machines I've set up since this issue are XP either "home" or "Pro". I haven't checked to see on my Vista clients yet. On at least two new systems I made sure to deselect the desktop shortcuts and start menu check boxes. When I do a fresh install or am working on a new system that my clients purchase, I uninstall the demo-ware and then install Anti-Virus almost always AVG Free for the home users and then Firefox. After that if they are going to use Microsoft Office, I install that, at that point I get all of the updates done. First using AutoPatcher and then going directly to the MS update site and downloading the few remaining updates. After that I install all the rest of the programs I want or need for the machine to make a lean but full featured adware free system. You're welcome to check out the programs I usually install from my site on my How To page. On the systems that already have CCleaner and just need the update, I just install over itself without doing an uninstall. Like the original post said what I objected to was that there were NO programs that I didn't want or even icons to programs that had been uninstalled and left icons.
  7. Davey, can you tell me how many systems that you've had good luck on? Since I first posted in this thread, I've installed on at least 10 different systems. On those systems the settings depended on whether or not CCleaner had already been installed before the new version. Or if CCleaner was being installed on a freshly installed or new system. That's why I'm hoping that the code writers or the admin(s) will respond. Have you had similar results?
  8. Hey Piriform! Still no love? I've checked the Version History and still don't see that this has been fixed. Also, I've noticed that on some systems these two boxes are checked by default. I still don't trust that these cleaners will work as they're described. If they're actually supposed to remove all the icons then I'll just keep deselecting them when I install, I would just like to know one way or the other. Thanks very much, Vic
  9. As I mentioned in my 'edit' above, did you download the latest version of CCleaner? If not try that first. I was very surprised when Spyware Doctor tagged CCleaner, but it was an older version, and after doing the updates it seemed OK. I did do a scan of the CCleaner directory and an "intelliscan" and it came up clean. Also I suspect that the folks at Spyware Doctor will get this fixed soon.
  10. Could you provide a little more info? Such as the exact name of the software and version info for the different programs, CCleaner and the bluetooth software you are using.
  11. CCleaner can delete cookies in Firefox. The settings for that are under the "Applications" tab. When you open CCleaner you are looking at a tab that has a list under it and the tab is labeled "Windows" but the other tab is the "Applications" tab. It is there that you will find the settings for Firefox. Personally, I let my antispyware programs get rid of the cookies that are bad so I don't have to log back into the many sites that I have cookies for. I do understand if you want to get rid of them. I find it easy when I do want to get rid of them in Firefox to go to "Tools", then "Clear Private Data" and choosing what to get rid of. Also in CCleaner I usually uncheck the "Utilities" boxes, because as a tech, I know that most of those logs aren't too large and also can be very helpful in finding what infection there may be on a machine or what went wrong with a machine. Also the same is true on the "Windows" tab for the "Windows Log Files". You might try my method for using the built in utility for Firefox to "Clear Private Data" once and clean everything. Then the next time after you've used Firefox for a little while, then try the settings in CCleaner and see if that works at that time. Also after running CCleaner reboot the computer and then look to see if your cookies are still there. After that if the cookies are still there, then there is a problem with CCleaner. But try those methods first.
  12. Are you talking about Spyware Doctor? If so there is a version that is free from pack.google.com that is the same as the full version except for some of the active protection features are disabled. Also you can get Spyware Doctor for $20 per year. When you want to buy protection, search for the product name and "coupon code" in the same search and you'll find good deals. For instance: "SpySweeper coupon code", or "Spyware Doctor coupon code". Both of these are excellent. As for your problem if you are using PC Doctor, I couldn't find anything current about it. Is it the software that came with your computer form the vendor, Compaq, hp, or Gateway? If that's the one, I wouldn't bother using it. For free protection I would suggest, AVG Free, BitDefender, AntiVir, or Avast. Anti-Spyware, Spyware Doctor from the Google Pack, AdAware, Spybot Search and Destroy, and for online scans do the Trend Micro House Calls. The Norton Scanner offered with the Google Pack is more of a headache than is worth having. http://www.viclovan.com/how_to.htm All that being said, it was a false positive just like q said. There's nothing malicious about CCleaner. While I've had an issue with CCleaner in the past it was minor glitches(and hopefully being looked into), and cleaning ease of use that it provides is second to none. About the false positive, I'm a tech and I use, and have used, many security programs in the past and have not had even one of them id CCleaner. ===================================== EDIT!!! ===================================== I have to eat SOME of my words! In order to do that though, I had to use old versions of both programs. I now think you must have been using Spyware Doctor for sure. I had to work on a machine today with version 1.41 of CCleaner and as soon as I tried to open it, Spyware Doctor popped up a warning that it had blocked CCleaner. Before I updated Spyware Doctor, I updated CCleaner and that solved the problem and opened up just fine. I then updated Spyware Doctor as well. I would be willing to bet that CCleaner was old on your system and that's what caused the false positive. Also if your Spyware Doctor isn't registered because you already have the free version from Google you are fine but I might update it. ===================================== Below is what was listed in the log for Spyware Doctor. ===================================== 1/14/2008 5:58:41 PM:748 OnGuard: System Event Blocked Threat Name - Trojan.Tagasaurus Details - Spyware Doctor has blocked an application attempting to access a file. Risk Level - High Infection - C:\PROGRAM FILES\CCleaner\CCLISTVIEW.OCX =====================================
  13. In the list of options, are the boxes for Desktop Shortcuts and Start Menu checked? If so I had a similar problem and don't know if it's been addressed yet. According to the online how to, those boxes are supposed to only remove shortcuts to the programs that are no longer on a system but on the system I was working on that wasn't the case. It was a system that was a clean install and as part of setting up a computer I always add CCleaner and run it after I install all the programs I want and do all of the Microsoft Updates.
  14. Do you reboot after running CCleaner?
  15. Suze, From the directory structure, it looks to me like you have, at some time, reinstalled Windows over itself possibly to repair Windows. Is this true? If so this could be a bug with CCleaner that maybe the software writers aren't aware of yet. For this particular situation, I would see if I could browse to that directory and delete the file manually. That should tell you if the problem is in CCleaner. If the files are locked in that directory there is a utility called "UnLocker" that is able to delete almost anything. It's definitely a program to use with caution because you could end up deleting a system file and make Windows not boot. In this case anything to do with the Temp Internet files you should be able to delete without any problems related to Windows. As far as your Windows Installation goes however, if you did reinstall Windows over itself, I would back up all your data and do a "Clean" or "Fresh" install. Even if reinstalling Windows over itself worked so far for you, it never seems to last very long once you start installing new programs. Windows can't seem to get past that little dot. In your case "\Documents and Settings\Susa Waugh.SUSAN-FF6ABE843\ local Settings" but what would make Windows smoother is "\Documents and Settings\Susa Waugh\ local Settings". I'm a tech that does this sort of thing quite a bit and in fact I usually try to name a computer during the install with just a single name, ie: "Susa", "Waugh", or "Owner". You would think after all this time Microsoft would have noticed this and tried some sort of fix. If you have any other questions or need help with backups, feel free post again here, as the folks on this board are pretty friendly and helpful. Or contact me at my own site, VicLovan.com. Good Luck, Vic
  16. Just a few of questions. Are you saying that you are trying to merge the multiple backups into one backup? or Are you trying to merge back the backup that you just made? If so, why? Is something not working after your scan and clean up? And if something isn't working after the scan, what?
  17. Not a bug. This is the intended function, in other words, it's supposed to "Run CCleaner" as opposed to just emptying the recycle bin. If all you want to do at that point is to empty the recycle bin, you should just choose the option to empty the recycle bin. If there are files that you don't want removed when CCleaner runs then uncheck the associated box in CCleaner. That way when you choose "run CCleaner" from the context menu it will only remove the files you want.
  18. To get rid of AOL, you might try any of these. From my own site go down to the "AOL 9 Removal Tool" and see if that works for you. http://www.viclovan.com/downloads2new.htm#catchall If that doesn't work then you can just reinstall AOL from one of the coasters you have lying around and then uninstall it after that. And I'm also wondering if you might have accidentally hit the "Delete Entry" button by mistake in the Tools part of CC?
  19. This will only be a small plug for Cobian Backup. If you create a dummy task, and schedule an "Event" using Cobian Backup it will work with at least version CCleaner version 2.01.507, and no Windows password needed. In fact you don't need the Windows password with the Cobian Backup for any of the scheduled tasks I've tried including CCleaner, Spybot Search and Destroy, AdAware, and WinAmp Playlists (my alarm clock). Cobian is open source now. You're welcome to get it from my site http://www.viclovan.com/downloads2new.htm#Backup or theirs, to try the scheduler, not to mention that it's a good backup program. Anyhow the "/Auto" works that way. I run it as: Hope this workaround gets you by. Vic
  20. I've been using CCleaner for quite a while now, and by the way - GREAT PROGRAM! (I just had to get that off my chest), and this is the first time I've had any issue with it. I had not used the newer feature for "Desktop Shortcuts" and tried it out on a freshly formatted reinstall of XP SP2 with all the updates done, and after all my program installs and tweaking (thank God for AutoPatcher - even the new BETA) was done. I wanted to get that machine as clean as possible so I turned to my buddy CCleaner and it removed the few program shortcuts that were on the desktop. I only had shortcuts for Pidgin, Firefox, CDBurnerXP, and Gimp 2. After running CCleaner they were all gone and I had to put them back on the desktop. The folder shortcuts for some folders that are in the My Documents folder were there, just not the program shortcuts. My Computer and My Network Places were there as well. Like I said before, this was on a fresh install and I had opened all of the programs before also. I read that the new box for the "Desktop Shortcuts" from the "CCleaner Beginner's Guide" I've gone back and unchecked the "Desktop Shortcuts" for that machine, but I would like to find out what went wrong. Thanks, Vic
