Is Java/JavaScript browser specific, or is it one-size-fits all for any browser type?
What exactly does JavaScript do and what is the function of Java? I'm using Firefox -- do I need both?

I have scanned with 4 Antirootkit programs and non of them found anything.
I have used Panda, AVG, BlackLight and RootkitRevealer.
Is BlackLight a free app or a commercial one?

I have the following Java stuff in my add/remove programs. It doesn't mean a whole lot to me, so I'm wondering what I need to keep and what I can dump -- or do I need all of it?
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Java Web Start
Java 6 Update 2
Java SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

I have Adaware 2007, Spybot S&D, SUPERAntiSpyware Pro, and SpywareBlaster.
It's better to be safe than sorry.
What do you feel that Spybot S&D does that the others don't do? Do you feel it's really a worthwhile addition to your spyware arsenal?

Tom, if you went to your tools/addons menu, although the uninstall button is greyed out, you can right click in the site advisor area, and the uninstall button is in the menu that appears.
I'm puzzled about uninstalling it because of pop ups. I've got the free version, and I don't get any pop ups.
This subject came up some time ago on here about Site Advisor showing a nag screen before taking you to it's site to check out an address, but apparently it only happened about once a month or something, although it dosen't happen at all now.
I've tried a forum search, but can't find those posts.
Maybe JDPower, rridgely or Andavari may remember, because it was p*****g every one off until JD pointed out that it wasn't permanent.
Sorry I can't give any more details than that, but I'm definitely puzzled about the pop ups, as this is a pretty valuable guide to a sites integrity, albeit just a guide.
Do you really find SiteAdvisor to be useful?

Make sure its not in add/remove programs. If not then you may have to manually go into your profile and delete it or even worse create a new one.
Thanks for the help. It was in add/remove programs -- which I did uninstall. I must have had multiple instances of the program because when I uninstalled it, it was still in Foxfire, but it corrected the issues that were giving me the headaches -- plus the Uninstall button is no longer grayed out in the Foxfire Tools menu. I don't know exactly what it did, but the uninstall process did something positive.

In what folder are Firefox bookmarks stored -- and what's the path?

How do I uninstall McAfee's SiteAdvisor from FireFox? When I go to the Firefox -> Tools -> Add-ons, SiteAdvisor shows up there, but the "Uninstall" button is grayed out.

Since the Firefox 2.0.0.6 update, I've been experiencing an "Unresponsive Script" warning every time I try to open Firefox. However, after it times out (10-20 secs), I can stop the script and Firefox opens. From that point on, everything seems to be OK. However, once I close the program and try to open it again, it's the same thing. Any thoughts? Anyone else having any problems?

Things like Wikepedia and Google can turn up allot!
Actually, since my original post, I've done some more research myself. It looks like Minnetonka Audio makes three "Disk Welder" software options specifically for this purpose -- creating DVD-A (audio) discs. The prices vary significantly over the three products from entry level to advanced. Of course, DVD-A is the hi-res audio format which has been squaring off against the Sony-Phillips SACD format.
Anyway, thanks for your help and input.

I'm looking for a good application mover to be able to move an app from one drive to another. I don't have the original install disc and need to move an app to another drive. Any thoughts?

Is the purpose of Movie Shrink & Burn 2 simply a way to compress and store/archive movie files -- or can you actually play the compressed CD/DVD output files?
-
Be careful using it, as it has the potential of removing necessary system files - something which it did on my system which is why I went back to Total Uninstall.
I'm sensing the Total Uninstaller might be the uninstaller app of choice-- right?
Also, is this an "active" program that runs constantly in your system tray?

Is there any faux pas in my operational order concerning my weekly computer maintenance ?
2) Removal of old system restore points.
How do you remove old restore points?

Firefox just uses whatever is the default player for windows. For instance if you want it to be Windows Media Player you just set it to default for mp3 and firefox will play it with WMP.
Can you tell me where to set the default player?
-
Just press the uninstall everything button. Worse case scenario is what you wanted anyway: you cant play quicktime files in any of your programs. Of course to fix this you get klite mega codec pack or quicktime alternative.
Thanks -- that makes me feel a little better.
One other related question . . . it appears that FireFox automatically uses QuickTime as its default mp3 player (at least on my computer). Is QuickTime a standard FireFox plugin? If so, how can it be changed, disabled or eliminated?
-
QuickTime has become somewhat of a pain for me and I would like to get rid of it. However, when I attempt to uninstall it I get the following message:
"Removing QuickTime system extensions can cause applications to malfunction. Click "Uninstall" to remove the applications that came with QuickTime. Click "Uninstall Everything" to remove the systems extensions as well (not recommended)."
All I've done so far is to click "Uninstall," but it does virtually nothing -- the app is still. However, I'm a little nervous to use "Uninstall Everything" for fear of . . . well, who knows what???
Any suggestions?

1. Open My Computer.
2. Right click each hard disk(s) or hard disk partitions one at a time
and select 'Properties'
3. Next click 'Tools' and under 'Error checking' click 'Check Now...'
4. In 'Check disk options' select 'Automatically fix file system errors'
5. Click Start
Repeat steps 4 and 5 for each hard disk(s) or hard disk partitions.
Windows will ask for a restart when scanning C drive, so perhaps do it last, and restart as soon as possible after.
Andavari stated: "A standard ChkDsk scan every 1 to 2 days. A full ChkDsk scan once every 1 to 3 months."
Are both of these options available in the above routine?
-
Full/Thorough ChkDsk is typically only ran on drive C: with the OS during that every 1 to 3 months checkup, and at the maximum twice per year on my secondary hard disk.
I'm a little embarrassed to ask, but where is "ChkDsk" and how do you access it?

I have been using Foxit Reader almost exclusively, but I still have Adobe Reader installed. Are there any good reasons NOT to uninstall the Adobe Reader? I don't want to get impulsive with an uninstall only to wish later that I hadn't done that.
-
Because CCleaner only finds entries that are SAFE to remove. I use, and only trust, Reg Mechanic and CCleaner
Have you by chance had any experience with Advance System Optimizer?

System Idle Process
in The Lounge
Posted
I noticed today that my computer was a little sluggish. I opened the task bar to find that my "System Idle Process" CPU usage was running at 98-99. Is this normal? What could be causing this and how do I correct it?
