  1. I noticed today that my computer was a little sluggish. I opened the task bar to find that my "System Idle Process" CPU usage was running at 98-99. Is this normal? What could be causing this and how do I correct it?
  2. What exactly does JavaScript do and what is the function of Java? I'm using Firefox -- do I need both?
  3. Is Java/JavaScript browser specific, or is it one-size-fits all for any browser type? I'm using Firefox -- should both be installed?
  4. Is BlackLight a free app or a commercial one?

    Java stuff

I have the following Java stuff in my add/remove programs. It doesn't mean a whole lot to me, so I'm wondering what I need to keep and what I can dump -- or do I need all of it? J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6 Java Web Start Java 6 Update 2 Java SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
  6. What do you feel that Spybot S&D does that the others don't do? Do you feel it's really a worthwhile addition to your spyware arsenal?
  7. Do you really find SiteAdvisor to be useful?
  8. Thanks for the help. It was in add/remove programs -- which I did uninstall. I must have had multiple instances of the program because when I uninstalled it, it was still in Foxfire, but it corrected the issues that were giving me the headaches -- plus the Uninstall button is no longer grayed out in the Foxfire Tools menu. I don't know exactly what it did, but the uninstall process did something positive.
  9. In what folder are Firefox bookmarks stored -- and what's the path?
  10. How do I uninstall McAfee's SiteAdvisor from FireFox? When I go to the Firefox -> Tools -> Add-ons, SiteAdvisor shows up there, but the "Uninstall" button is grayed out.
  11. Since the Firefox 2.0.0.6 update, I've been experiencing an "Unresponsive Script" warning every time I try to open Firefox. However, after it times out (10-20 secs), I can stop the script and Firefox opens. From that point on, everything seems to be OK. However, once I close the program and try to open it again, it's the same thing. Any thoughts? Anyone else having any problems?

    DVD-A

Actually, since my original post, I've done some more research myself. It looks like Minnetonka Audio makes three "Disk Welder" software options specifically for this purpose -- creating DVD-A (audio) discs. The prices vary significantly over the three products from entry level to advanced. Of course, DVD-A is the hi-res audio format which has been squaring off against the Sony-Phillips SACD format. Anyway, thanks for your help and input.

    DVD-A

What burning software and what type of media should be used to create DVD-A discs? Also, what type of playback equipment is required for DVD-A?
  14. I'm looking for a good application mover to be able to move an app from one drive to another. I don't have the original install disc and need to move an app to another drive. Any thoughts?
  15. Is the purpose of Movie Shrink & Burn 2 simply a way to compress and store/archive movie files -- or can you actually play the compressed CD/DVD output files?
  16. I'm sensing the Total Uninstaller might be the uninstaller app of choice-- right? Also, is this an "active" program that runs constantly in your system tray?
  17. How do you remove old restore points?
  18. Can you tell me where to set the default player?
  19. Thanks -- that makes me feel a little better. One other related question . . . it appears that FireFox automatically uses QuickTime as its default mp3 player (at least on my computer). Is QuickTime a standard FireFox plugin? If so, how can it be changed, disabled or eliminated?
  20. QuickTime has become somewhat of a pain for me and I would like to get rid of it. However, when I attempt to uninstall it I get the following message: "Removing QuickTime system extensions can cause applications to malfunction. Click "Uninstall" to remove the applications that came with QuickTime. Click "Uninstall Everything" to remove the systems extensions as well (not recommended)." All I've done so far is to click "Uninstall," but it does virtually nothing -- the app is still. However, I'm a little nervous to use "Uninstall Everything" for fear of . . . well, who knows what??? Any suggestions?
  21. Andavari stated: "A standard ChkDsk scan every 1 to 2 days. A full ChkDsk scan once every 1 to 3 months." Are both of these options available in the above routine?
  22. I'm a little embarrassed to ask, but where is "ChkDsk" and how do you access it?
  23. I have been using Foxit Reader almost exclusively, but I still have Adobe Reader installed. Are there any good reasons NOT to uninstall the Adobe Reader? I don't want to get impulsive with an uninstall only to wish later that I hadn't done that.
  24. Have you by chance had any experience with Advance System Optimizer?
  25. Great list of stuff. Thanks for posting.
