Lots of good external HDs out there now, I'm sure. However, I'm using a Western Digital "MyBook Essential" and have had no problems at all. The only issue I've ever had is that once in a while, there's a slight delay (seconds) in accessing that drive. Not sure why that is, but it does happen from time to time -- but not always .
I'm also a Macrium Reflect user and store my image on the WD drive. This seems to work well for me. And like Dennis, I try to create a new backup image every month.

Inpaint is again available for free today from Giveaway of the Day.. This is a great little app for removing unwanted items from a photo.

Reinstalled -- everything seems to be working fine now.

For some reason after the auto upgrade to the newest version MBAM couldn't be launched, I just reinstalled it myself and it worked after that.
Maybe that's the problem. I'll also try re-installing.

Anyone else having a problem updating Malwarebytes or is it just me?
-
I'm still using CCleaner 2.24 for this very reason -- everything since is just way too slow!

Here's a little utility called PCDecrapifier that may help you a little to sort through things. I've never used it myself, but I know a few people who have -- and it's free for personal use.

That said, it's always useful to have a checksum ... you might want to keep it for a future comparison for example. Unfortunately that's one thing the Auslogics tool doesn't give you.
I'm not exactly sure how to interpret this, but I found the following statement on Auslogics site:
"Auslogics Duplicate File Finder has the MD5 search engine which allows you to find duplicate files by content, regardless of other match criteria. It would be helpful, for example, when two identical mp3 tracks or video files have different names. "

I haven't used this app so I don't know much about it, but you could take a look at this one from Auslogics.

I've never had a problem either with what CCleaner deletes. However, if deleting to the Recycle Bin were a feature, how hard is it to empty the Recycle Bin?
-
I would second that suggestion -- a good idea that shouldn't be too hard to implement. Have thought about this idea many times over the past couple years -- it would be a nice safety net.

I've used Registry Mechanic for at least a couple years now along with CCleaner -- never had any problems here.

What is "Quick Defrag" and how is it different from the standard defrag?
-
I've had it happen here as well.

(Note to self, make long overdue investment in external HD )
A great investment, JD. I've had one for years. And now, they are so incredibly inexpensive that you can hardly afford not to have one.

just would like to know if you would recommend CCleaner 2.26 to me, got v.2.24.
I'm certainly not making a recommendation, but I'm still using 2.24 myself. On my XP computer, the Analyze time increased significantly with both 2.25 and 2.26.

The free version of PhotoFiltre is pretty good for image editing.
This is a pretty good one, Dennis, I've also used it.

Andavari, which hash checking program do you prefer using . . . Karen's "Hasher" or NirSoft's "Hash My Files?"
-
There must be loads of programs for searching the registry if that's what you're after; I can recommend nirsoft's RegScanner as one such utility.
That's exactly what I'm looking for. I'll check this one out.
Can you delete whatever entries it finds directly from within RegScanner -- or do you have to open Regedit -- one entry at a time?
-
What is the safest and easiest way to search the registry for old uninstalled proram remnants? Is Regedit about the only way to tackle this? I have numerous uninstalled apps still showing up in my CCleaner Application list, so there must be registry leftovers.

I use Foobar2000 for music, MPlayer with MPUI for video as it plays everything, and I use Windows Media Player to put music onto my Sony Walkman.
Thought that's what you might be using, Dennis. Thanks for confirming.

Thanks for the comprehensive explanation.

Although it's a few years too late now, I always thought a big chance missed back in the days of cassettes, was to use Video Tape for recording music.
Back in "the day," Dennis, this was actually used quite frequently in professional recording studio applications.
Internet Explorer 7 vs CCleaner?

Generally, when I run CCleaner, a pretty good chunk of the junk it finds is "Internet Explorer -- Temporary Internet Files." Except on rare occasions, I don't even use Internet Explorer -- I use Firefox almost exclusively.
So, what's all of this stuff that continually needs cleaning from Internet Explorer??
