  1. I just purchased and installed a Netgear WNDR3700 Dual-Band wireless router (2.4GHz and 5GHz). This is the first dual band router I've owned, and I'm not really sure how they're supposed to operate. What's puzzling me is that I never see any "activity" on the 2.4GHz band ? it all seems to be on the 5GHz band. Is this how it's supposed to work ? or are both bands supposed to be working simultaneously? Maybe I need to adjust some settings, but not sure what to change.
  2. Dual-Band Wireless Router Question

I really appreciate all the comments, but I may not have made myself clear (probably because I know so little about this stuff). I was thinking that I could use the 2.4 band with a laptop and the 5.0 band for streaming HDTV (Netflix), but I don't know how to set the router up to accomplish this. Do you enable both bands so that they work together simultaneously ? or do you have to manually select one band at a time for each particular use? Guess I was thinking that the laptop would somehow automatically grab one band and HDTV would automatically use the other. I thought maybe the two bands worked together concurrently in an "auto-switching" manner. In other words, in the event that one band became overloaded or ran into problems handling/transmitting the data, it would automatically roll over to the other band. Will it do this, or doesn't it work that way?
  3. Dual-Band Wireless Router Question

Supposedly, the 2.4GHz band is broadcasting b/g/n and the 5GHz band is broadcasting a/n. This stuff is all new to me, so I'm not sure what it all really means.
  4. Dual-Band Wireless Router Question

It's an "N" type router. So does the router automatically determine which frequency to use, or do I have to manually select one or the other?
  5. Overwriting HDD to sell PC

    Another option, Darik's DBAN.
  6. "Windows Security" bug

    All's good here, Dennis.
  7. Anti Malware setup

Andavari, have you ever had to use Macrium for a "full image" restore. If so, just wondering how smoothly that went?
  8. What Anti-Virus do you use

Does Avast AV Free provide e-mail monitoring/protection for POP3 e-mail clients?
  9. Delete old Java folders?

A while back at the suggestion of Dennis, I uninstalled Java. However, I just found a few leftover folders. Is it OK to delete the following and all their contents?: C:\Windows\Java C:\Windows\Application Data\Sun
  10. Winapp2.ini additions

What exactly gets cleaned with "Windows System Profile?" Are they all temp files? Also, what about the "Cached Fonts" and "Cached DGI+Fonts?"

I'm not much of a video guy -- in fact, I know very little about it. However, I'm looking for a real simple video editor (preferably free) just to do some real easy movie editing (like cut out a couple very short sections and do a little cleanup at the very beginning of a movie). Any recommendations or suggestions?
  12. I could use a little help. Actually, I'm rather embarrassed that I can't seem to figure this out. I have several components of MS Office 2000 currently installed (Word, Excel, etc). I know this is antique software, but it still serves my needs very adequately. However, for some reason, Publisher won't function without the original installation CD loaded in the CD drive ? then it works just fine. Every time I click on the Publisher icon, it asks me to insert Disk 2. I've tried over and over to re-install it and it always looks as if the install is going just fine, but once the CD is removed, it won't work and I can't even access it. It always wants to read/access everything exclusively from the CD ? not from my HDD. (By the way, the other Office modules work just fine directly from my HDD). I must be doing something wrong. How do I get this module (Publisher) to install completely on my HDD?
  13. Need a little MS Office installation help

Nergal... I owe you a HUGE apology! I'm not sure what I did on my first try, but I just went back through your suggestions again, and it now appears that everything is working perfectly. THANK YOU so much.
  14. Need a little MS Office installation help

Have tried the suggestions from both Nergal and Andavari -- still no success. And Andavari, cannot find either a opa11.bak file or MSOCache folder.
  15. Need a little MS Office installation help

Hopefully, you're on to something. However, I was sure what you meant by "uninstall clip-art." Can you elaborate? Also, what exactly is meant by "installed on first use?"
  16. Winapp2.ini additions

Are there any negative effects of cleaning "WMP Databases" with winapp2.ini? I assume they're recreated as needed.
  17. Very likely, this question has been asked before, but here goes again... I have a relatively small system HDD (C:) ? about 75GB ? along with a 1TB external drive. The "used" space on my system drive is about 33GB, and approximately 42GB of "unused" space. After running a Defraggler analysis, the map legend displays roughly 20%-25% of my system drive as "Reserved MFT Space." There are no files in this area ? it's just being "reserved. Is this normal? It seems like a lot of space being reserved. Is this amount of space in any way being impacted by my external drive?
  18. Winapp2.ini additions

Just saw "Sandboxie Container Files" in the new winapp2.ini. What exactly are they?
  19. Anyone know exactly what this option does?

Actually, Dennis, I have no idea where the MDS file came from, or anything else for that matter. When it came to the Backup step, I did select ISO - that's all I know. The DVD I started with was a DVD+R, which was made from a VHS tape. Don't know if that had anything to do with it or not, but at least I got what I needed. Thanks again.

Well, I did it! Thanks Dennis ? and Andavari, your instructions were great and it worked perfectly. And I see what you meant, Dennis. Actually, I went through the process a few times and each time became increasingly easier. I guess it's just that first time reading the directions and trying to figure out exactly what you're supposed to do. Even though everything worked and I've already burned a new DVD (which actually plays in a stand-alone DVD player), the "ISO" file that was supposedly created was not an archive file (as I had expected it to be and as Andavari confirmed). Instead, I ended up with four stand-alone individual files (DVD_VR.100, DVD_VR.101, DVD_VR.102, DVD_VR.MDS). However, when I went to the folder that had these files, I guess ImgBurn found what it needed and burned and verified everything perfectly. Now, I'm just wondering if you have any ideas as to why I didn't get a typical "archive" file?

Thanks, Andavari. One other thing... once you've written the ISO file(s), do they end up in an archive folder (such as zip, winrar, etc.) or is it/are they just stand-alone file(s)?

Dennis, with the method you've outlined using DVD Shrink, do you first need to rip the DVD to an ISO file, or do you just work directly from the DVD?

WOW, Dennis, I never dreamed it would be so complicated, but thanks for all the detailed info. Actually, I do have DVD Shrink, but as you can probably tell, I've never used it You were correct, the DVD I have is DVD compliant with vob, ifo and bup files. And you were also correct that the "cleanup" needed is the removal of a few frames. Well, guess I've got my work cut out for me trying to figure this one out! Sure wish it were a little easier. Thanks again to all. Edit: Dennis, you mentioned avi. I don't really know what I'm talking about here, but would ripping/converting the DVD to another format such as this make things any easier -- and what about the quality? If that's easier, maybe I could then use a little editor to remove the unwanted frames and ultimately get it back to a DVD compliant format that would play on a standard stand-alone DVD player.

Thanks for the help so far. Very honestly, I don't even know where to start. I have a DVD with a movie on it (DVD+R) that just needs a very little cleanup. How do I get it onto my computer? (I'm sure you can't just copy it like a data disk). Once it's there, then what? I don't know one video format from another. I just want to get it onto my computer, do a little cleanup work, then burn a new DVD. Sounds like it should be fairly simple, but I suppose it's not.
