CCleaner Analyze button grayed out

Recommended Posts

I don't have an excessive amount of software installed, no. I've not had any issues with earlier versions of CCleaner either. When I install an earlier version now, I get the same problem as above.

I should mention that each time I uninstalled CCleaner, I reinstalled from a brand new download, not the previous one I already had - I've done this four times!

When I boot in Safe Mode, the problem is still there - grayed out "Analyze" and "Clean" buttons, no list of applications.

I'm stumped...

Are you 64bit or 32bit?

Do you have any other kind of problems with your system at the moment?

What anti-virus/malware applications do you have installed?

Are they up to date with their definitions and scans are clean?

Do you have any special type desktop themes etc installed?

Just to narrow things down have you tried running CCleaner from another account, does it do the same?

That shows your system has changed.

Perhaps you have installed something that is causing grief.

Perhaps a Windows Update has caused grief..

My prime suspicion is that when you uninstalled the non-usable CCleaner a corrupt Registry key got stuck and left behind,

and this cannot be replaced with a valid key when you install any version of CCleaner.

I suggest that you try using the Portable version of CCleaner - I never use anything else.

If the Portable version works for you then you either continue with the Portable and live with a corrupt key that does no harm,

or you fix the registry should you want to again instal CCleaner.

Fixing the registry is brave - and not what I would recommend.

It sounds (to me, anyway) as if CC is unable to initialise. You could delete or rename the Ccleaner folder in Program Files (or wherever Win 7 keeps its progs) and then try yet another install. This will give you a fresh set of ini files.

Or try the portable version as Alan says. preferably on another drive or flash drive.

  • 4 weeks later...

I tried renaming and reinstalling for a fresh set of files - didn't work. I also tried using the "Portable" version - it doesn't work either.

I'm truly stumped!

I appreciate all the suggestions, but something has seriously changed in my Win 7 OS, I guess...

64 bit machine, 32 & 64 bit versions of CCleaner Portable (and I've tried both versions with same results)

> Do you have any other kind of problems with your system at the moment?

No other current problems

> What anti-virus/malware applications do you have installed?

Microsoft Security Essentials (latest version)

> Are they up to date with their definitions and scans are clean?

Yes - up to date and clean scans

> Do you have any special type desktop themes etc installed?

Standard Win 7 desktop

> Just to narrow things down have you tried running CCleaner from another account, does it do the same?

I only have the one account set up as I live alone - so no...

Jim this shows you how to set up a user account (don't worry, its real easy). Don't bother setting a password for it if you don't want to it's only a test.

If you do feel you want to try this (which is really just to see if it's an issue with your account) just make the account, boot into it and see if ccleaner works on it.

After the test just delete the user account you made.

UAC question wasn't answered.

ADVICE FOR USING CCleaner'S REGISTRY INTEGRITY SECTION

DON'T JUST CLEAN EVERYTHING THAT'S CHECKED OFF.

Do your Registry Cleaning in small bits (at the very least Check-mark by Check-mark)

ALWAYS BACKUP THE ENTRY, YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU'LL BREAK IF YOU DON'T.
