Check for Update error

Crane

Recommended Posts

I'm using CCleaner version 3.17.1689.

When I click on the Check for updates link, a printer window opens.

I've searched through the Forum for anything similar, but have not found anything.

I did reload, but same problem occurs.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Have a read of this thread here.

http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=35471

Near the end you will see how to check what is set to open HTML files.

Can you check what it says in yours?

Also any other info you can add, such as operating system etc.

(Welcome to the forum by the way :))

Thanks Hazelnut.

Such a newbie mistake ;) . My system is running Windows Vista 32-bit SP2 on a Toshiba Laptop.

I went ahead and changed the associations for .htm and .html. to Internet Explorer.

Rebooted and the same problem occurs.

The only major change that I've done lately was install Microsoft Office 2010.

Is there another html file type that I should be looking for?

Thanks again.

What were the file associations set to before you changed them to your default browser?

What happens when you ask Office to print a doc?

Where you click on 'check for update' on the ccleaner GUI what happens if you click on the Online Help link at the opposite side ? (bottom left of ccleaner GUI)

Is your printer ePrint enabled? (what is your printer?)

It seems that many users of Office 2010 have 'issues' with file associations etc. after installing

To make things interesting I found this link, so I'm wondering whether that can give us any clues.

Microsoft ® HTML Application host

What happens when you ask Office to print a doc?

No issues, works fine.

Same thing, a printer window opens.

Is your printer ePrint enabled? (what is your printer?)

HP Deskjet 6980 series - I think it is too old to be ePrint ready.

I've noticed some other HTML file types, but they're associated with PowerPoint, Excel, etc.

Read through the yahoo page, not quite sure if it is the right path to follow.

Can we blame Bill Gates for this? :D

Probably !!

Regarding the Yahoo link I was just wondering if in your case the ccleaner site was sending a 'print this page' in HTML instead of 'update'. Not really sure about that though.

Hopefully someone else will jump in with any ideas they have.

Do you by any chance have Recuva or Defraggler? If so, do they do the same?

Do you actually have Chrome installed?

Of course if the worse comes to the worse (!) and any answer/reason is never found, just check on the forum for updates and download them from ccleaner site. That way your problem goes and we get to chat to you on forum :)

(Obviously I prefer that it gets solved)

I confess to not being too knowledgeable about this HTML stuff, but after having a look at my XP associations I'm wondering if the little devil which hasn't been mentioned yet may have something to do with this.

HTA: (HTML Application) - set to open with Microsoft ® HTML Application host

I've no idea if it could even figure in this issue, but as it is part of the same little gang, thought it worth a mention.

I do have Defraggler installed and yes, it is doing the same thing.

Do you actually have Chrome installed?

I have a Chrome variant installed - SRware Iron. It's better about privacy than the full Chrome. But Internet Explorer is my default browser.

I did try DennisD's suggestion, but it had no effect.

Thanks for all the help, hopefully a solution will be found.

You are going to love this.

Your question about my web browser got me thinking about what was my default browser.

Opened up Internet Explorer and it was not my default browser. Changed it back to default and both the Check for update and Online help links work.

So, from the beginning...

I changed the .htm and .html file associations to Internet Explorer.

I then made sure my default browser was Internet Explorer.

Pass this on to others.

Thanks for all the help!

Well Crane sometimes it is events like this that make us look at something twice.

I bet you did all this just to get us working!!!

Seriously it's great that it is all sorted now, and thanks for posting back with what 'cured' things... many don't bother.

See you around :)
