CCleaner Not Wiping Recycle Bin

Kalis

Recommended Posts

Hello

Using latest CCleaner and the winappi file, sometimes CCleaner is not erasing the recycle bin properly, i had 2GB of deleted stuff in my Recycle bin and CCleaner wiped it in 4 seconds so something is wrong, it did this on two pcs as well, both with winappi.

Whats going on, a bug ? It doesnt do this always, maybe every 3 wipes.

Cheers.

Hi Kalis,

Thanks for the input.

Please provide some more input.

These answers help to evaluate the problem.Provide as much information and detail as you can.

Just fill in the answers next to or below the questions?

Did you do any software or hardware changes installs or uninstalls?

If any changes then have you checked with those forums or manufacturers?

What happens if you disable those changes?

Are you running with Administrator privileges.

CCleaner version ?

What Language did you request at install,if any?

OS,edition ,32bit or 64bit and version ?

Browsers and ver.?

Security software and ver?

Other data you think might be relevant?

What did you do and then what happened?

Provide a list of your CCleaner.ini file.( Tick option for Save settings to INI file at Options > Advanced then close CCleaner. This file will be created in C:\Program Files\CCleaner folder.)

Thanks for your feed back,

Make a backup of CCleaner.ini, then delete your current one.

Let CCleaner make a new copy and see if your problem reoccurs.

Thanks, i did that but it didnt work.

This is a screenshot of CCleaner wiping a big file 7 times in 1 second. WOW............ NOT. It must be a bug, it does this on 6 pcs now ,all different specs.

It constantly amazes me that FBI or CIA or Interpol or Al-Quida wannabe agents come here because they are paranoid that their precious surfing habits and tracking cookies can not be eradicated by CCleaner.

Personally I think that Secure Deletion should be removed from CCleaner and that duty should be left to applications that are designed to do that like Eraser!

Are you using the Installed or portable version. Try and unpack the portable version onto a mem stick or just your desktop if you aren't using it. I'm not sure why your ini is missing such critical info (what if you paste the recycle line above into yours, after backing up your ini first.

Hi Kalis,

Are we having fun or what ? I think so.

Man, Kalis, you must have a monster Recycle Bin(s) !!!

Or maybe that is part of the problem.

Tell us about your Recycle Bins. Also any messages that you get when you put stuff in there will help.

Just for your benefit and some other users as well. Do this fun thing before you print off your

CCleaner.ini file . After you see it, you may want to create a new backup of YOUR CCleaner.ini file also.

1. Start CCleaner.

2. This is the fun part. Just don't "goof it up" and not reset the option the way that it was when you started.

Toggle each "individual" option. If it is ticked then untick it and then tick it again . Vice-versa if it is unticked at the start.

3. Do this for each "individual" option in each category in each tab. Windows tab and Application tab.

4. Do this in Registry issues as well. Remember, "individual" options only.

5. Do this in Options > Settings This also includes the language.

6. Do this in Options > Advanced This also includes toggling the Save settings to INI file. This must be toggled last and left ticked but it must be toggled or this whole process is wasted.

7. Exit CCleaner.

Now look at the CCleaner.ini file. Nice and sorted and it shows each and every setting. We don't have to remember what the embedded internal "default" is.

When you provide a list then you can edit out personal info with XXX's and such. PLEASE DO SO.

P.S. Here is an example of my CCleaner.ini file.

Hi davey,

Its weird coz its done this on a few pcs now, 3 of which are freshly installed XP Pro SP3 systems. There are no strange things about any of the recycle bins, and CCleaner does empty them, just doesnt shred the contents each time. !!

I ticked /unticked and made a log, recycle bin is listed but it hasnt made any difference, If it was just my PC that was doing this, well ok.... but it isnt, i have seen this on quite a few now.

How big are your Recycle bins ?

Do you get any messages when you delete things to the Recycle.?

CCleaner can't shred what just gets deleted and not actually put into the Recycle Bin.

You may want to set-up a Special Shred Folder. And drag and drop all the "monsters" into there.

Have an Include entry in CCleaner for that folder to be cleaned.

Not A bad idea that Davey, thanks. ;)

My recycle bin is as follows 10% Drive C: and Drive D: both reserving 3.99GB each But my girlfriends Recycle bin is only 1GB, and that does the same occassionally.

Anyway a custom folder for crap sounds good.

Yes, I've been doing this for several years, actually called Crap. If only CC had a context menu option to run CC on this folder alone, or the option to run Included folders only....

I knew I got that idea from a "reliable source".

Of course you want to name it something less attracive like "Statistics". Nobody is going to look in there.

Everybody and his brother is going to want look into a "XXX Pics" , "JUNK", or "Secrets" folder.

P.S. EDIT As you say WinXP SP3 What edition Home or Pro?

Also what kind of PCs are we talking about ? Manu. + model etc. Especially what CPU chips ?

 I give up, i had a 250Mb full folder, added it to the custom files/folders. And wiped. CCleaner did exactly the same thing as it did to my recycle bin !!! Deleted the files in 2 seconds and didnt shred a thing. And it was set to 7 wipes. !! Jeez.

What kind of file types are we working with?

The files are usually large zip files or avi files which i have burnt to disk and then no longer need. My Girlfriends pc shows exactly the same symptons when she deletes and tries to shred the same movie type clips and zips. I have used CCelaner for many years and this never happened before, the fact it is happening on two totally different PC's is odd.

The onlt thing that the PC's have in common is that they are both XP SP3 and have recently added the same recent set of windows updates.

If i gather some temp internet files it always shreds those, it just cant handle large 100MB plus files. Also CCleaner is making my floppy disk drive growl on each wipe, how can i stop that ?

Thank you.

Maybe the information will help the dev in tracking down the possible cause if it is a bug. As for the floppy drive issue. Does the drive access happen when you first launch CC or durring the analysis or scan? If not durring the app launch then have you tried adding the path to your floppy as an excluded path? CC under Options>Exclude click the Add folder and select your floppy drive.

Note this is an untested theory.

Hi Disk4mat

Tried excluding drive A:\*.* but it didnt work im afraid, not that that is much of an issue. ;)

Hi Kalis,

I edited my post above with a few more questions?

How long ago did you go to SP3?

How fresh install or what ?

I would expect some strange things until your PCs get completely updated. There were many after install SP3 problems for some number of reasons.

I think that you pointed that out in your last post. I am checking for a few that you might need and don't even know it. That is why I edited my last post.

See you later,

:) davey

That is just what these relate to. Did you have Update and Install problems along the way since MAY? I did.

Anyhow you might want to check these out in case you didn't get some updates offered to you because of these problems.

No update problems at all, no system errors nada. all is running sweet. SP3 Final Standalone, but CCleaner was working fine until a few weeks ago. All 6 pcs here in UK and Canada, all wont secure wipe every time.

I just made a discovery tho !! If i dont run analyze first and go straight to clean it seems to work ok. Fingers crossed eh.

Thanks for the new information. This will very useful for other WinXP SP3 64 bit platform users.

May be of use to the "Bug Fixers" also.

What edition of WinXP are you using ?

Pro, Home, or Media Center or is Final Standalone an edition that I just don't recognize?

Are all 6 PCs 64-bit platform ?

Thanks again, :) davey
