URGENT--PLEASE HELP! --after using Registry Cleaner

Hi--

I used the CCleaner for the first time several weeks back & it successfully removed 29GB (Yes!--29GB) of files that were showing in the Windows Temp folder. Right clicking on each of the subfolders did not locate the files. I felt confident enough in the SW to take the next step.

Last night, I DL'd & installed the most recent version 2.11.636 & ran the CCleaner again. It seemed to work fine again. The reason I came upon the CCleaner is ever since the beginning of the Olympics, I have been getting www.textdoor.com/?3 popups and www/hdcj.com/?3. I went to a Beijing Olympics website to check the medal counts & it has been happening ever since. That hdcj is a Chinese site. It turns out that the CCleaner did not fix the problem, but I didn't find that out until recently.

After doing the 2nd Cleaning, I did the registry cleaning & backed everything up. There were still files showing, so I ended up hitting the Scan for Issues button 4 times & did 4 backups until there were no more files showing.

Right now, I need to transfer videos from my camera to my PC that need to be used for work in the morning. When I plugged the camera in, the drive does not pop up in Windows Explorer as it usually does. I thought that the Reg. Cleaner must have deleted something needed to run the program, so I DL'd a new USB Driver from the Fuji site, deleted my old driver & tried to install the new one. When I tried to execute the prog., it gave me an error--process not completed. Now I'm worried that other files needed to execute WinZip or other programs have also been deleted.

So, the question of the hour is--do I merge the Reg. Backup files as directed in the FAQ's? OR--What do I do now? PLEEEEEZE HELP!!! I have a meeting in 8 hours & need to empty my camera so I can record our conversation.

Thank you to anyone that responds ASAP!!

With your urgent deadline I don't think now is the time to talk about the fact that CCleaner is not a popup remover, that is a different issue, a possible spyware problem.

As you don't seem to have any other options, try re merging the backups. If that doesn't work, try a system restore to a date before you did the reg clean.

Let us know how you go on.

Thank you, Hazelnut, for such a prompt reply. I merged the 4 Reg. Cleaners & tried to run the USB Driver exe again & it gave me the same error: Self-Decompression Error - Failed to Decompress the Archive.

If anyone else has any suggestions, please help!

I'm brainstorming... is it necessary to reboot to restore the files after doing the merge? Should I try DL'g another Fuji viewer? or ?

Thanks!

Hi sharplady,

These guys are doing their best and so are you. Good for you to keep calm.

I think you need professional help like Kinkos or similar. Your PC is apparently infected and we don't know how much time you have left. You need a clean PC and person to person help.

Good luck,

:) davey

hazelnut has a good suggestion. If system restore is an option, you might consider it. What OS are you using and what is the model of your camera?

Oh, Please, Please, PLEEEZE do not tell me I need to screw with System Restore! I did SEVEN :o System Restores on my old Compaq 7598 & what a fricking nightmare! MY newest desktop is a generic that was put together by an acquaintance & has been running BEAUTIFULLY until this recent incident. If it helps, the MB is shown below:

Sorry I forgot to mention my OS etc...

XP SP2 & Fuji Finepix F-10 (AWESOME Camera, BTW...)

My Motherboard is:

VIA Technologies PT800CE-A Motherboard

& now I have noticed the weirdest thing... the MSWord Doc containing the info that I had already researched on this PC has changed from either Arial Narrow or Times New Roman to Helvetica... AYCARUMBA! I have NEVER used Helvitica!

Pleeeze HELLLLLP! :o

It sounds like your system is infected with one of the many antivirus2008 infection mutants.

Download SDFIX on an non-infected system then install it on the infected system by transferring it on a diskette or Flash stick:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic131299.html

You may want to print the instructions out as they are quite lengthy and requires rebooting without an Internet connection.

After you remove what it finds then download and install MBAM then update its definitions then run it and let it remove what it finds rebooting if necessary to delete locked files:

Seems you have a multi-faceted problem, which could have more than one source.

Possibilities:

--you have one or more infections.

--your file associations for some operations have become corrupted/absent.

--your autorun has become corrupted.

--other.

Normally it would be appropriate to post a full HJT log, having gone through the malware removal proceure. It seems this needs to be rushed a bit, though.

I'm reasonably well versed in the ways of Windows, this is what I would do, considering the time budget.

--Reconsider using system restore for the problem. I have had the odd situation where it hasn't functioned correctly, nothing approaching a nightmare, though. It should be straightforward.

--Download MBAM, install it, during the install, tick the boxes to check for updates and scan the computer. It's possible that if malware is detected, it will ask to delete files on reboot, answer yes, and reboot promptly.

--Download the Autoplay repair wizard to your desktop. Run it, go through the prompts.

--Check if anything is better.

--If the camera came with a software installation disk, try reinstalling the software.

Good luck.

Hmm, three hours to go.

Do you need your pc or just the camera for work?

If the former, can you borrow/pinch another pc and load the software/vids on to that, and then use that pc?

If the latter, then download the camera onto another pc, or nip out and buy another memory card.

Wonder if using a usb port at the back of the computer might work?

Worth a try. And if the camera is used on another system, it had better have good up-to-date anti-malware software installed and resident if it's an infection causing the problems.

Hi?

Get ready for a laugh! I postponed my appointment until tomorrow & contacted Fuji. While we were discussing it, the agent said it sounds like your USB isn?t plugged in. I thought, that?s impossible?I have had it plugged in at all times since I bought that camera. Then it dawned on me. In July, I bought a Micro Bluetooth Adapter & I was out of USB slots, so something had to go. I cracked up laughing at myself! I had the disk with the drivers on it & I was back in biz. I can?t believe I didn?t spot it after reading the posts!

I REALLY appreciate all the GREAT suggestions from everyone!! It was a bit baffling, because I didn?t know which to do first. I HATE doing OS restores. To me, the nightmare is not in doing the restore; it?s in having to reinstall all of my software. I have a lot of programs on here & it?s just a pain in the rear? I understand it is something I may end up having to do anyway & I guess I?ll have to face that when the time comes.

Knowing there?s still a bug on here, I DL?d the Malwarebytes & just finished running it. Sure enough, there were some Trojans that my AV & Spybot S&D & Trend Micro System Clean did not find. I?m pretty surprised. I thought I had all my bases covered? Obviously, I?ll delete those, but these other two pose questions:

Vendor Category Items

Adware.Coupons Registry Key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{87255c51-cd7d-4506-b9ad- 97606daf53f3}

Adware.Coupons Registry Key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Code Store Database\Distribution Units\{9522b3fb-7a2b-4646-8af6-36e7f593073c}

(Obviously that fourth & fifth line should be under the items column, but when I tab forward, it starts moving the line above it?!?!? The trojan?s fault?) The fact that they?re in the Reg. scares me, so I thought I?d ask before making a mistake. Should they stay or should they go? Gut says GO?

Also, for future reference, if I?m running a Reg. Cleaner, how do I know what to keep?

Thank you again for all your help.

PS?I doubt I?ll be able to access that MS Autorun prog. The bozo that sold me this thing did not put genuine software in it. I know? I know? It?s on my list? I'll probably just get a new laptop & toss this one...

Since MBAM found malware on your computer you should really follow these instructions to make certain it's really gone.
