sherri48
I got a notice that an update was available for my (free)CCleaner. I currently had version 5.32.6129(64bit). I downloaded ccsetup533.exe and attempted to install it. I got pop-up message "Error opening file for writing: C:\ProgramFiles\CCleaner\Ccleaner.exe" Neither "retry" or "ignore" allowed it to install. I don't know what the problem is. Can someone help me. Thanks.........sherri Edit: I am using Windows
Moderators Nergal Posted August 15, 2017 Moderators Share Posted August 15, 2017 Check that ccleaner's not running while you install (check the system tray and task manager) ADVICE FOR USING CCleaner'S REGISTRY INTEGRITY SECTION DON'T JUST CLEAN EVERYTHING THAT'S CHECKED OFF. Do your Registry Cleaning in small bits (at the very least Check-mark by Check-mark) ALWAYS BACKUP THE ENTRY, YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU'LL BREAK IF YOU DON'T. sherri48
No, it is not running. I have tried to install numerous times. I have tried Aborting, Retrying, and Ignoring and it still won't install. Never had a problem before this update.
Moderators Nergal Posted August 15, 2017 Moderators Share Posted August 15, 2017 Try downloading the portable version and drag/drop all the contents, except portable.dat, on top of the current ccleaner (found in program files folder) ADVICE FOR USING CCleaner'S REGISTRY INTEGRITY SECTION DON'T JUST CLEAN EVERYTHING THAT'S CHECKED OFF. sherri48
Sorry, I don't know what a portable version means. Where is it? What is it called? Do I just copy all of the files in it and paste them in the CCleaner folder in the Program Files folder? I'm afraid I'm not very adept at moving files around and I'm afraid I'll mess something up. sherri48
I tried your suggestion above. I first uninstalled via settings. Then went to C:/ProgramFiles and tried to uninstall the folder and two files remaining in the folder (CCleaner.exe and CCleaner64.exe); however I got a message that I needed administrator rights to do that (I AM the administrator - the only person using the computer) Edit: Well - I can't explain it but - I downloaded the 5.33 again and this time, it took!! And is working fine. (I had rebooted once in the interim) So I don't know how it happened but am glad to have my CCleaner back and working once again. .........sherri
Moderators mta Posted August 17, 2017 Moderators Share Posted August 17, 2017 those two files need to be removed, admittedly, the new version should perform and over-the-top install, but it looks like it isn't. any luck if you try to get rid of those remaining files when you boot the PC into Safe Mode?
