Unlocker embedded toolbar

I know I'm late to the party.

But in researching a post in another thread, I realised there has been an update from 1.9.1 version to 1.9.2 (done in May 2013 - told you I was late)

Just wanted to bring to the unwary user's attention that MalwareBytes blocked suspicious site: nsis.bisrv.com and vendor: PUP.Optional.Somoto with file: bitool.dll

Seems to be related to the bundled Delta adware toolbar.

info on bitool.dll found here; https://www.herdprotect.com/bitool.dll-40ce0a58e99858007e5dcd0bb5bf6a122686a917.aspx

Othewrwise, still be damn useful program.

And thank-you MBAM !

I haven't used Unlocker for years since the bundling in of adware began. Locked files or processes can often be unlocked by using Task Manager to end-task Explorer.exe and then start it again via Task Manager, and when that doesn't work just log off and log on - that's what I've been doing since Unlocker went the adware route.

What I found infinitely more interesting than this discussion of Unlocker was the link you provided to herdProtect - I'll be giving the portable version a try.

I'm still using unlocker ver. 1.8.9 on win xp and 1.9.2 on win 7.

As mta said, it is a great software.

It would be so much better if the author had not included those ebay and delta toolbar addons.

I daresay those trigger so many antivirus warnings that they prevent many folks from using unlocker.

As an experiment I just now downloaded and installed versions 1.8.7, 1.8.9 and 1.9.2 here on xp.  In succession, not all at once.

Found out these things:

- must disable Avast to download and install them.  I actually had to rename the exe files to download them.

- do uncheck the "automatically check for updates"  box.

- don't use the express or standard install, use the custom instead.

- 1.8.7 and 1.8.9 want to install an ebay shortcut or something but you can skip that, must uncheck the box.

- 1.9.2 wants to install the Delta Toolbar but you can skip that, must uncheck all 3 boxes in the advanced install option.

- unlocker is not easy to uninstall if you ever want to get rid of it.

- both the ebay shortcut and the delta toolbar are a real pain to get rid of if they get past you when you are installing.

The CCleaner SLIM version is always released a bit after any new version; when it is it will be HERE :-)

my usage of Unlocker is when deleting stubborn folders and files.

sometimes a file just won't delete, and rather than manually delving into the Security properties, which involves changing Permissions, Effective Access and Auditing which I used to do, Unlocker does it all with one swift mouse click.

They, like ccleaner, do offer a zip version with no bundle

And they fully advertise in the changelog that there's optional delta bar

Right now firefox phishing protection blocks the site which in my opinon is silly

But here's a screen grab

I can't get the empty loop site to download anything, and the older versions link there appears broken.

I got the older versions from Filehippo and Majorgeeks.

1.8.7 and 1.8.9 are the ones I had to rename.

edit:  version 1.9.0 is available as a portable (zip) from Softpedia and AfterDawn.  It downloads OK.  Have never used it.

Yes, thanks, I did that a couple of times and the links rolled me around to brothersoft, then to 76files dot com, then back to brothersoft, over & over.

No popup blockers, no download blockers were apparent, and no download happened.  So i just got the files from other sources.

Anyway the whole exercise was just to be sure one could avoid the fully advertised delta toolbar and the ebay link during installation.    One can indeed do so.  :) But for most folks it wouldn't be worth the trouble, I guess.

Just tried the same sites using Seamonkey in Puppy Linux.

Same deal, round & round, no download, no popup blockers.

I might be doing something wrong, but I clicked on every link I could find, including the advertisements.

Any idea whats up with that?

good, so it wasn't just me either.

tried the same thing, trying to get the portable version, but I suspect it doesn't exist, or if it does, it's damn nigh on impossible to get.

The only portable I could find is ver 1.9.0, a zip file,

See post #6 this topic.

I did try it, it seemed to work, can't try it right now, am on the wrong OS for it.

Lol me too, that's why I haven't checked back in on this, I've yet to be on a PC since last posting.
