Windows 10 removed CCleaner

Recommended Posts

Today two computers I have with Windows 10 installed some update, and the result was that both CCleaner and Spybot Search & Destroy were removed by Windows 10 because they were "incompatible".

In the note about CCleaner being removed, it said that CCleaner damages Windows 10, which is why it was removed.

Hi, I found the same thing, you can find it in the windows.old folder in the program files sibfolder and can safely cut/paste (move) it back to the proper program files folder and it works fine.

It would be nice to know what exactly CCleaner does that damages Windows 10.

nothing (well probably Microsoft removed it because of registry cleaner) Microsoft is being overly zealous, and disabled any application that might hinder the upgrade

complete stab in the dark here, but if you had monitoring turned on, I could see MS stopping the application so it wouldn't 'clean' files needed to install TH2, but why uninstall it - how very MS.

Backup now & backup often.

Don't know, but not only did moving it work. But reinstall also worked(same with speccy)

Thank you for the responses.

On one computer I have reinstalled CCleaner with no problems.

I do not use the monitoring feature.

I am a computer tech and have installed and used CCleaner on every computer I've worked on.  Without knowing what Microsoft has against CCleaner, I am going to have to assume that it is the Registry Cleaner part.  I guess I had better use the reg cleaner more sparingly in the future, only using it to remove registry entries that I'm 100% sure about.  That's going to take more time.

As you are installing Ccleaner on muliple machines I assume you have a paid business licence from Piriform and therefore are entitled to direct priority support.

Oops.  Sorry.

I'm a small-time, part-time computer tech who has installed the free version of CCleaner on less than 100 computers over the past 10 years.  Thus I suppose I'm not allowed to ask for help, or report problems.

Forget I said anything.

Win 10 Up to 5711 takes our more the CCleaner. It took out Speccy and it took out my old reliable WS-FTP and some Applian programs but not all under the Directory.

Worst was Royal Bank of Canada cookies did not work even though they were in the saved place - right side of listings in CCleaner.. Had to move them to the left part - delete - manually re-enter account number at bank site and confirm save account - leave coolies in left part of CCleaner. Re-start and check - move cookies to right part  and try again. Took 3 restarts and resets but now it seems to be remembering the long account number OK.

I wonder how many other programs have been affected.

Oh! and while my 2 Epson printers work and show up in the device and printers my good old Brother laser does not. It works fine though. I had to reinstall to get the options to work for it and it still does not show in the Devices and printers at all. It works so that is what counts to me.

What next will I find?

Bruce, I don't think that was what hazelnut's, well meaning, post was meant to imply (though I can see how one might feel so).

Your thread is very important to both the community and the developers. I can confirm that both a move from window.old and a fresh install do not get moved on reboot. I'm sure that Microsoft will come to a fix for moved applications as this is an issue bigger than Piriform (CCleaner and Speccy) and is effecting even large hardware/software makers (my bluetooth drivers from RICOH were moved and I had to reinstall them, and a popular CISCO VPN software was also reported).

I have stickied this thread in the hopes that others will see they are not alone. Thank you again, Bruce, as your thread was confirmation to my initial (random) find of ccleaner being moved (with no notice from Microsoft).

Bruce, I found the same thing.  I reinstalled it and found it did not work properly.  It removed many files as supposed to but would not remove temporary files, 5,000 of which, as well as few sundry files from internet explorer.  Otherwise seems to be doing its job.  Am thinking of uninstalling and reinstalling again.

I have a theory. This latest update not only removed CCleaner, it re-installed all the Windows 10 crap apps I had removed... 3D Builder, GrooveMusic, Messaging, Money, Movies & TV, OneNote, Sports, Photos, Sway. Most of these can't be uninstalled via Windows, but CCleaner can do it. That's pretty evil, Microsoft.

Hi All,

Just to add some additional information to what's already been stated..being a 'Windows Insider', I've been testing / providing feedback by installing Windows 10 build's before they are released to the general public. Having said that, yesterday I downloaded / installed the latest Windows 10 Insider Preview (Pro. Edition 11082). Like other member's have stated in here..after installing this software, I no longer had CCleaner installed either..I know that Microsoft must have had 'some' kind of reasoning in the back of their minds for doing so. I do plan on following up on this with the 'appropriate' people @ Microsoft. On such place would be here: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10

I had a big problem with CCleaner, which I have followed since three Windows before. Never a problem with earlier versions of Windows. Now, with Windows 10 I noticed a strange permanent activity of the disk in the background. I checked with two antivirus programs. Problem continues, sometimes taking complete control of the PC.

The only program I loaded before the problem started was CCleaner. I deleted CCleaner with pain in my hart. However, the problem didn't end. Somehow, it corrupted my system.

I asked a professional consultant from Microsoft to fix it, and he tried with advanced antivirus tools. However, he couln´t fix it.

If you want to see what happens start the Windows "Task administrator" and see how CPU is used very intensively even if you dont start any application. It runs on the background in a frenzy, using as much as 99% of CPU!  It is really bad.

Hope Pririform staff and Windows staff find a solution to this. In the meantime, the only options that come to my mind are return to Windows 7, or change to a Apple computer. Both expensive.

If anyone has a solution to this, please share with the Forum. Tks.

This doesnt read to me like a CCleaner problem.

My advice is to run

dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

followed by

sfc /scannow

from an adminsitrative command prompt. hopefully one or both of these commands will help sort out whatever issue is going on with your system (note: this is not malware removal advice, these commands repair the component store and check the system folder for corruption respectively)

I would second Winapp2.ini's suggestion... fixes lots of things.

As he said, don't foget to run the cmd prompt as admin (right click, run as..)

If you need any help with doing this just ask.

Greetings All,

I'm new to this forum stuff so please be patient.

I have attempted to follow the forum string on the Window 10 removing CCleaner. However, I could not find a solution to my problem which is this. I originally downloaded CCleaner about 12 months ago - without any problems. I recently upgraded to windows 10 and started to get the message "your app isn't compatible with windows insider preview" every time I started my computer. Even though the CCleaner program was supposed to be deleted by MS, on clicking the CCleaner icon it still ran. I then did the following:-

a) Uninstalled the original version of CCleaner.

b ) Downloaded latest version of CCleaner (free version)

c) Ran it and still got the same message.

d) Uninstalled latest version.

e) Rebooted computer and still got the same message - even though CCleaner was supposedly not on the computer.

f) On doing a file search I found that the two versions of the CCleaner .exe files were still listed in the download file.

g) I removed them and rebooted and still got the original error message.

So the question is what, and where, is windows 10 picking this so called  app, up from?

Can anyone provide a solution? If so please keep the response simple for dummies.

Thanks

That message indicates that you have signed up to the 'Windows Insider' programme, which is a beta testing programme.

Insiders get advance, possibly unstable, copies of Windows 10 for user testing.

As these are not fully released versions you can expect to have some problems with them, that's why they need testing.

Microsoft give a list of known issues with the version as they release it to insiders, and insiders then test it to try and find any other problems.

As you seem to be running an insider build then your problem may well be with Windows rather than CCleaner.

Did you mean to sign up to the insider programme, or did you mean to get the stable release of Windows 10?

You can check which version/build you are running by going to- Settings > System >About

The latest stable version for normal users is 1511, released in November 2015, and the build is 10586.63.

The latest Insider build is 11099, that was released on Jan 13 2016. Details

The previous Insider build was 11082 that was released on Dec 16 2015.

If you have signed up to the insider programme by mistake then you can leave and switch back to the stable version.

Well the message you say you got was:

"your app isn't compatible with windows insider preview"

Which would seem to indicate that you are runing an Insider preview build?

Did you go to Settings > System > About to check what version and build you are running?

You might also want to look at Windows Updates >Advanced options, to see what the section about insider builds says:
