What to do with the Recuva download file?

I just downloaded Recuva free version, and it's a file with an unrelated name and extension that my neither computer (or myself) has a clue what to do with?  Do I need to download another software to open this obscure .wml file?  And then what?  Looking inside the file I see a long list of scripts(?), but nothing to indicate I just downloaded an application.

My suggestion is how about some instructions to be read before the download is attempted.  Or how about a more common type download file that anyone can open?

In the meantime, I'm stuck and not wanting to spend half an hour scouring the internet trying to figure this out.

Here's the link I got it from: http://www.piriform.com/recuva/download

When you get to that page, go to the left side where it says Recuva Free.  Then below it are two download links so pick the one from Piriform.com.  Then double click on it and when the Open or Save File window pops up you will see the name of the file I was asking about.  It's called text/vnd/wap/wml and it's from www.piriform.com

I don't know where your link comes from, and looking at the Piriform website headers at the top of the page, none of them drops down to any section called "builds".  Do you suppose I reached a fake Piriform website?

When I follow your link I get an immediate 'Do you want to run/save?' message with the correct filename (rcsetup153.exe).

If you go to the bottom of your link page there is a link to the builds page, where you can choose the standard install or the portable version. It doesn't matter whether you use this or your link to get the installer.

I don't know where your file came from, it certainly isn't any of Piriform's software. I should dump it and download again.

@jbclem,

I too followed your instructions and came to the downloads page where it pops up a window and the filename is the correct rcsetup153.exe one.

what is your browser and Windows OS?

if you click on the Builds link provided by @Augeas it should take you straight to a page with 2 green download buttons, one for the Free version and one the Portable version.

if you don't see that, you have other issues with your browser/PC.

This is bizzare...something must be compromising my browser, or the piriform website.  I just went to http://www.piriform.com/products, which different from the  /downloads page, yet when I clicked on the download button up popped the same download window with the "wml" file wanting to be downloaded.

I then went to the /builds download page and was able to download the correct file (rcsetup153.exe).

I've been using Palemoon on Windows XP.  I just switched to Firefox 44 and tried the www.piriformcom/Recuva page.  I scrolled down to Recuva Free, clicked on the Download button and up popped the download window with the "text/vnd.wap.wml." link.

I made a jpg of this page with the download window and I'm attaching it if anyone wants to see it.

I don't think the Piriform website is the issue, it's something to do with either your system or browser configuration.

Also clicking the "Download" button on the page you visited http://www.piriform.com/products shouldn't automatically start the download, here's what it did for me (it's a multi-step process):

1. I went to http://www.piriform.com/products, and I clicked Download for the Recuva listing.
2. It then loaded this page http://www.piriform.com/recuva/download, and on the left for Recuva Free I clicked Download from Piriform.com.
3. It then loaded this page http://www.piriform.com/recuva/download/standard, and never automatically started the download however clicking the text link start the download and the Start Download button both downloaded rcsetup153.exe

Perhaps Hazelnut is onto the cause, the MIME types in your browser could be messed up. Other than that I don't know how attempting to download an .EXE executable file would result into a .WML mail file downloading instead.

Edit:

On a side note from looking at your screenshot you're running two adblockers in your browser; Adblock Plus and Ublock Origin. Not that they'd be the cause of your issue however you shouldn't be running two adblockers simultaneously as having two could severely impact your web surfing speed.

also try temporarily disabling all your extensions in your browser.

you seem to have more than just the 2 ad-blockers.
