October 2016 Desktop

As we draw closer to December and the end of another year, for me October each year is special. Excuse me while I explain.

The reason for me is that as a V8 motor racing tragic heralds several days of V8 motor racing at Mount Panorama, motor racing circuit Bathurst. Bathurst is a motor racing track located in the township of Bathurst, New South Wales Australia. It is best known as the home of the Bathurst 12 hour motor race, held each February, and the Bathurst 1000 motor race, held each October.

The track is 6.213 km (4 mi) long, and is technically a street circuit, as the circuit is a public road when no racing events are being run, and there are many residences which can only be accessed from the circuit.

The track is an unusual design by modern standards, with a 174-metre (570-foot) vertical difference between its highest and lowest points, and grades as steep as 1:6.13. From the start-finish line, the track can be viewed in three sections; the short pit straight and then a tight left turn into the long, steep Mountain straight; the tight, narrow section across the top of the mountain itself; and then the long, downhill section of Conrod Straight, with the very fast Chase and the turn back onto pit straight to complete the lap.

So the above is the reason I nominate for my October Desktop choice...................a Motor Racing pic again. So Folks let us see you do your best.

Tas, I love V8 racing and the Bathurst in particular, and will hopefully catch it on TV, or elsewhere. Amazing track, cars and history.

Here's my contribution, which is the 1963 Bathurst Armstrong 500 winner, a Mk1 Cortina, and of particular interest to me as this is the car in which I learned to drive. Well not this particular car sad to say.

At the time, and within it's price bracket, the MK1 Cortina was one of the best cars on the road and I remember those lessons like they were yesterday.

1963 Ford Cortina Mark I GT sedan. Outright winner of the 1963 Armstrong 500 race at Mount Panorama Bathurst, driven by Australian production car racers Bob Jane and Harry Firth.

The 1963 race was the first to be held at the Bathurst track. This car is now displayed at the National Motor Racing Museum at the Mount Panorama circuit.

Taken at the inaugural Bathurst International Motor Fest 2006, held at Mount Panorama Bathurst.

EDIT: I took my test in 1968 I hasten to add, not 1963. I'm old enough without adding 5 years.

Cars went quite a few years in those days without real changes, unlike now when models change before you can turn around.
