crossing my fingers
Hi, I'd like to start by saying I have used the search feature and tried finding the specific answer but have had no luck (although it could be out there). I ran CCleaner for the first time the day before yesterday (3/28). I saved the .reg files so that I could restore those files in the event that I had issues after having used the program. (disclaimer: I'm no computer wiz, but I have grown up w/ computers since the internet was around so I'm not a total dummy either). I've read through the help section on Piriform and it seems pretty straight forward. Locate the .reg file that were saved and double click to restore them. But when I do I get an error message X Registry Editor: Cannot import C:\Users\Nancy\Documents\CCleaners Registry Backups\cc_2013038_170248.reg: Error accessing the registry. I ran the registry cleaner, then I did the cleaner, and to be thorough I reran the registry cleaner. So I have two .reg files saved. (maybe I shouldn't have done it twice?) anyway, I'm running windows 7, not sure what other info I should include. I would really love to get some advice / guidance from a more knowledgeable user if possible. Thanks in advance Edited March 31, 2013 by Nergal OS emphasis added by Moderator
kroozer
Your registry is backed up in System Restore. Do you have a Restore Point you made beforehand?
crossing my fingers
Your registry is backed up in System Restore. Do you have a Restore Point you made beforehand? Not that I'm aware of. I did run a windows update and a virus scan before I used the ccleaner. Those normally say something about creating a restore point. But I'm not totally sure to be completely honest. kroozer
In Start\ Control Panel\ System\ System Protection\ System Restore, click on System Restore button and proceed.
crossing my fingers
In Start\ Control Panel\ System\ System Protection\ System Restore, click on System Restore button and proceed. ok, did that, went into control panel/system & security/backup & restore and it says windows backup has not been setup. not sure where all those restore points that windows update and my virus program created. So since apparently I dropped the ball and didn't setup the back up (I thought it was) am I screwed? Are the .reg files that I saved the other day worthless? I really appreciate all the help your providing. Please let me know if I'm leaving anything out that I should be including.

kroozer
In CCleaner\ Tools\ System Restore, are any points listed?
crossing my fingers
there is, one from 3/22 when I removed Java 7 update 11, and one from 3/20 - windows update. Is it as simple as selecting one? I don't want to do anything that's going to cause more problems.
kroozer
Very good, that will do. You can't use it from CCleaner, you gotta use from Windows, so there must be some way you can run it in Windows. In System Protection\ Protection Settings, OS[C](System) should show protection as On.* Then clicking on System Restore\ Next should show the restore points. Select the most recent, preferably. Like Hazel said, you gotta run as admin. I'm always admin on mine, ensure you are on yours. *Edit: DO NOT turn it off, cos that will lose all your restore points. Moderators hazelnut Posted March 30, 2013 Moderators Share Posted March 30, 2013 Don't forget to right-click on the ccleaner reg backup and look at properties. It should say that it uses regedit to open with. If it doesn't it may mean your file associations are messed up. Moderators Nergal Posted March 31, 2013 Moderators Share Posted March 31, 2013 first let's narrow this a bit: do you know what part of the removed registry you need back, is a specific windows-feature and/or program not working? Second (I.e. Don't carry this out til answering yes/no to the above part) you should be able to run regedit as a program open the start menu in the search box type regedit and press enter You may get a UAC prompt answer yes for elevated privileges. answer the first part of this post for further instructions, please und danka. ADVICE FOR USING CCleaner'S REGISTRY INTEGRITY SECTION DON'T JUST CLEAN EVERYTHING THAT'S CHECKED OFF. Do your Registry Cleaning in small bits (at the very least Check-mark by Check-mark) ALWAYS BACKUP THE ENTRY, YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU'LL BREAK IF YOU DON'T. crossing my fingers
To everyone that was so kind as to offer their help, thank you sooo much. Long story short the issues I was experiencing that caused me to want to undo the registry cleaning I preformed has been solved. Essentially eliminating the need to restore the back up files. Keeping my fingers crossed that I don't run into any other issues. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Happy Easter to those who celebrate that and I hope your all enjoying your weekend for those who don't. With much appreciation - me
