your firewall might not trust the application and block all its ports... something like that

try turning off your firewall, and test it... or just switch to winamp

If you're using WMP 10, the master setting is:
Tools > Options > Player > Player settings > Connect to the Internet (overrides other commands)

that master command is already checked. i dont have a software firewall installed only the netgear dg834gt firewall and i dont know how to allow a program in this.

Are you just trying to get it to find the names of songs? Its not your router(routers only block in coming trafic not outbournd).

This is a longshot but ... is it possible that you have cleared all Online Stores or their url's? View > Online Stores I think at least one has to be defined.

Sounds like the whole internet component has been damaged.
Consider uninstalling and installing.

Go to tools>Options.
Under the privacy tab make sure everything is checked.(in the top section only.)
Then go to the network tab and make sure all of the connection types are checked(http, UDP, ect.)
Under performance make sure you have detect speed automatically checked.
Let me know if any of that fixes it.
oli
Nov 11 2005, 10:21 PM
yep network and performance are all ckecked right but i can only check two of the 4 options in privacy

internet component of wmp10??
Any application that can use the internet (e.g., to update) must contain scripts and addresses. This could be code right in the app, a simple additional executable, or a complete separate application. WMP obviously uses IE as an interface but I have some updaters that don't.

Try going to tools options.
Then look under the library tab. Make sure the box that says retrieve additional information from the net is checked.
I will try to find some info if that dosent work.

Well there are some security softwares that can disable WMP from being able to use the Internet at all by disabling it's features. You don't by any chance have any such software installed that's blocking it do you?

Glad you got eveything sorted. I have never seen that safe xp program before. I will have to give it a try one day.
If you decide you still need a good media player and get tired of WMP. I highly recommend this:

looks like i got overexcited. i used safe xp to remove the restrictions but it still wont let me update the media info, also cant dl codecs.tried reinstalling but no luck.
im not sure but i think something else might be blocking it because when i uncheck the box for updating media in safe xp i will use wmp a few times but then if i check safe xp again it has been rechecke

WMP is not a bad program. For someone who just wants to burn audio discs and listen to music, why not?
Oli I don't have any idea what the problem is. Seems to me like that safe xp program messed up a reg key somewhere. Does it have a restore feature to undo its fixes?

Sorry I couldn't help with your main problem but some info ... I believe WindowsMedia.com is the default Online Store for the US version of WMP10. With the Canadian version, it was Napster's Canadian site. I think it's because of differing copyright laws.
D'Oh! - Did you ever have these features work? When WMP10 was first released, I seem to recall there were different versions by country. Could it be that these features aren't supposed to work for that reason?
oli

i never tried before but some of my friends can use it so surely i could aswell. safe xp does have a restore feature which i tried but it did not work

i found that safe xp makes this proccess irreversible. but i assume you can reverse it if u save the settings. so this is my request would some1 be able to download this program save their settings without using it and send me the file i would be very grateful. especially if it worked
