Not to nitpick, but a hosts file isn't really software, so shouldn't this be in Windows Security?
Anyway, thanks for the update!

1. Computers. the programs used to direct the operation of a computer, as well as documentation giving instructions on how to use them. Compare hardware (def. 5).
2. anything that is not hardware but is used with hardware, esp. audiovisual materials, as film, tapes, records, etc.: a studio fully equipped but lacking software.
3. Television Slang. prepackaged materials, as movies or reruns, used to fill out the major part of a station's program schedule

Clearly it is software. smile.gif

I'm aware of what software is, and I still think posts about hosts files belong in the Windows Security forum.

Threads about anti-virus software are about.....software, yet they still get posted in the Windows Security forum.

It was just a friendly suggestion, but hey, what do I know? You're the mod! smile.gif

Thanks hazel.

I tend to agree with TeeJay, the hosts file is a part of Windows, so therefore it is a bunch of settings within Windows, not software that actually allows you to perform something.
The hosts file was originally designed to locate network nodes on a computer network, however the MVPS hosts file went a step further by providing security on a computer.
Windows Security would then seem a good place for it, but hey, no matter where it is posted we are made aware of it so all is good in the end.

And if I'd seen this post first I wouldn't have added it to the post in the Security section! So here I go adding another pointless addition to the forum!

Look on the bright side ... at least there's no excuse for anyone having an out-of-date list wink.gif
