I use SiteAdvisor on my XP Pro system and WoT on my XP Home system and a HOSTS file on both but I do add the latest sites to the HOSTS file as soon as I see them.

I use Sandboxie.

I just use Firefox's builtin protection and Adblock Plus. Nothing fancy.

If you consider ad blockers a form of protection I use one on all my browsers along with Sandboxie. I never get anything though.

What is that? Not familiar with it. I use Ad Block Plus in FireFox.

I didn't actually install it. It came with Firefox, and the first I knew of it was seeing it in Opera:plugins.

I don't have it in any of my FF installs. What version of FF are you using?

I've been jogging my brain about this, and I remember it was pre-installed in Firefox 3. There seems to be some debate over this:

My install definitely came with it, and I remember reading about this being pre-installed before I tried FF3, and it was there in the add-ons window.

I think I took it out of FF 3 before I binned it and went back to the version I have now, and simply put it in the plugins folder.

Works a treat as well.

What does it do and how? Is it just an ad blocker and if so is it as good as Adblock Plus?

When you say it's a plugin do you mean an extension or it's actually in the plugin folder with Flash and the rest of them?

Isn't SuperAdblocker made by SuperAntispyware?

Apart from my hosts file it's the only ad blocker I have, and I've never used "Ad Blocker". With FF all I ever needed was my Hosts File and Flashblock.

I know this thing is blocking flash ads from what I can't see when I visit Deezer, a site I use a lot.

With FF it's obvious from the little Flashblock activation buttons what's being blocked, but with Opera I don't see anything.

If you look at the screenshot above, that's all it is, npsabffx.dll file in the plugins folder.

Just Adblock Plus and NoScript. I was about to add Sandboxie but generally, it's not considered as an add-ons. Nevertheless, it provides security we can trust.

I stopped using MVPS Host file in my desktop and another laptop running Vista. The slowdown I experienced with the HOST file at start-up truly bogged me.

I know Sandboxie is not considered an addon but it protects the browsers better than any if the addons mentioned here and that's why I use it in place of them.

I don't use a Hosts file for the very reason you mentioned. I experience no slow downs with the ad blockers I have in my browsers so I see no need to change.

I don't get any slowdown with MVPS Hosts. Just out of idle curiosity I've just timed my startup with Hosts on and off.

More or less identical startup times.

Sorry if I'm asking the obvious, but you guys do have DNS Client disabled in Services don't you? Absolutely essential for a Hosts File.

My DNS Client is enabled. For some reason, I feel a bit slow response in surfing the net when that service is disabled and does well when the service is enabled. It's probably just an effect of a placebo. I'll try again using it with DNS Client service disabled and time it, as soon as I got back from vacation.

Opera (my default browser): JavaScript & Java disabled globally. 3rd party cookies not allowed. Referrer disabled.

IE7: Internet zone set to "High". Microsoft.com along some other sites added to Trusted sites zone. 3rd party cookies disabled. Java disabled globally. Remember that some IE settings affects to other MS programs too, like WMP and OE (even though i use Thunderbird)

I get a big slowdown when I have both hpHosts and MVPS HOSTS files active and the DNS Client Service is active.

HostsMan will offer to disable the service when it is run.

HostsMan is showing 63,473 Host names active in my HOSTS file.
