Hello,

I have read some of your fix threads and am extremely impressed with your thorough work. One of our computers is redirecting to random sites when we click on search results (Google, Live Search, and maybe others). I have run a few of the reccomended programs and removed a few infections, but the problem persists. Any help would be greatly appreciated. My hijackthis log file is below.

Welcome to the forum. :)

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.sub.../Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingc.../Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

Once the desktop loads please post the text that will open (report.txt) back into this thread.
Post a hijackthis log as well.

Before we continue I have a question. Do you connect to the internet through a proxy? Is this something you know about?

Open hijackthis and do a system scan. Then check off the following entries:

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{2EAEDBF6-49A1-4E26-8233-2751EF350535}: NameServer = 10.0.1.10
O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.115.236 85.255.112.186
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.115.236 85.255.112.186

Now press "fix checked" and exit hijackthis.

Post a new hijackthis log and let me know about the proxy.

Yes, this computer does connect to the internet via a proxy (located at 10.0.1.10). Yes I know about this as I set it all up. This computer was not being filtered using the proxy because it is one of our general managers computers and go figure, it is the only one of 15 that got infected.

I removed the three items and here is the new HiJackThis log...

Are your searches still being redirected?

Run Kaspersky WebScanner
  • Please go HERE and click Kaspersky Online Scanner
  • Read and Accept the Agreement
  • You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • If you see a Windows dialog asking if you want to install this software, click the Install button.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files,
  • When the "Update progress" line changes to "Ready" and the "NEXT ->" button becomes available, please click on it.
  • Click on the Scan Settings button, and in the next window select the Extended database, and click Ok.
  • Under "Please select a target to scan:", click My Computer to start the scan.
  • When the scan is finished, click the "Save as Text" button, and save the file as kavscan.txt to your Desktop, close the Kaspersky On-line Scanner window.
  • Paste kaspersky log onto forum.

Sorry for the delay in response as this is a work computer. Yes, the search results are still being redirected. I cannot run Kaspersky because it will not update the definitions via a proxy server. The update fails and the scan is not allowed to run. What shall I do next? Most recent HiJackThis log is below.

Alright, then lets try these scans:

Run BitDefender Online Scanner
  • Using internet Explorer please go HERE to run BitDefender's Online scan.
  • Read the terms and then click I Agree
  • You may receive a Security Warning about the BitDefender ActiveX control, If you do, please allow it to install.
  • On the scanning Options screen, Press Click Here To Scan and then follow the on screen prompts.
  • Once bit defender is finished scanning your computer it will automatically remove the infections. Once the removal process is finished press the close button and a dialog box will appear asking if you want to send your scan log back to the makers of bitdefender. You do not have to do this but what you do want to do is press the button that says "view log" and then copy and paste that log into notepad and save it to your desktop as bitdefender.txt.
  • Reboot your computer
Run Panda Activescan from Here.

Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan
(Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When the download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location so you can post it back.

OK, I have attached the two scan report files. Note that the E: drive is a secondary drive, not a boot drive.

Delete this file if its still there:
E:\My Documents\AOL Downloads\MySpaceContent.exe

Download Blacklight beta HERE and save it to your desktop.
Run the program, accept statement > click next then scan
When its finished scanning exit the program and post back the log if it detects hidden files, The log is called 'fsbl-<date/time>.log' which will save to the same location as the blbeta.exe file.

Also please post a new hijackthis log.

OK, I deleted the requested file and ran the blacklight scan. Blacklight found nothing. My latest HJT log is below.

Yes, the search results are still getting redirected.

A little more info: One of the sites that the search results get redirected to on a regular basis is Stopzilla. I am doing all of these scans remotely via remote desktop connection. This computer has two main users not including the administrator account. One is mine, one is the stores; both are administrator accounts. I have been doing the scans logged int my account. Do I need to do the scans in each account?

Where do we go from here?

Regards,
Aaron J. Wood

Download this file - combofix.exe and save it to your desktop.
Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When it's finished, it will produce a log of what it found. Please post the contents of that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running as it may cause it to stall

I tested the computer using Google and could not get it to redirect. Google seems to work find. I spoke to the store manager about 2 minutes ago and asked him to tell me excatly what he is doing when he gets redirected. He says that he opens his IE browser and the home page is MSN he then types drudge report into the MSN search and clicks on one of the links. He then sees in the address bar it saying redirect blah blah and something with jump in it.

Here is the ComboFix log:

Give me a hijackthis log from your other account.
It shouldn't matter but its worth looking into.

Also if you remote into that account try browsing msn for a minute to see it for yourself.
Let me know what happens.

Sorry for the delay in getting back on this. For some reason I can no longer log into the PC remotely using Remote Desktop. I had to physically go and check it out. Everything seems to be working fine now. Thank you for all of the help.

Could any of the scans have messed up the remote login? I am not sure what is going on as I can remote into some PCs now and not into others.

Regards,
Aaron

I don't think any of the scans could do that. Especially since the last thing you ran was combofix and it didn't even delete or change anything.
Did you check the firewall setting to make sure nothing changed?
