Hi chajun

There's an article here that may help with the hibernate problem,

http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com...?threadID=16508

Your HijackThis log has afew entries to fix which I will mention below, you should avoid having more than one Anti-Virus program installed as they use alot of system resources and if they conflict with each other it can cause slowdowns and crashes as both AV products are trying to do the same thing at the same time, If Avast and Norton are both providing 'On-Demand' protection then you should consider uninstalling one or disabling the real time protection so that only one AV is running and starting with Windows,

Goto the Add/Remove screen (Start Menu > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs) and remove Starware if its in the list,

Run Hijack This and choose Do A System Scan then place a check next to these entries

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = ht*p://as.starware.com/dp/search?x=wKX1ILE...EhYhhCXAqGn2do=
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = ht*p://as.starware.com/dp/search?x=wKX1ILE...8zsAhk41LFWNTw=
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - s - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - SlimBho2.dll' - (no file)

Close all open browser and other windows except for Hijack This and press the Fix Checked button

Your version of Ewido is out of date as its now named AVG Anti-Spyware, if you have paid for Ewido then you can update it using this link

http://www.ewido.net/en/upgrade/

If its the free version then it can be uninstalled using the Add/Remove screen and then update to AVG Anti-Spyware here

http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Download AVG Anti-Spyware
  • Load AVG and then click the Update tab at the top. Under Manual Update click Start update.
  • After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
  • Click on the Scanner tab at the top and then click on Complete System Scan
  • AVG will list any infections found on the left, when the scan has finished, it will automatically set the recommended action. Click the Apply all actions button. AVG will then display "All actions have been applied" on the right.
  • Click on "Save Report", then "Save Report As". This will create a text file which you can then save to the Desktop and post back
You also have alot of programs starting with Windows (04 in HijackThis) as they are genuine its your choice if you need them all starting on every reboot but this may cause slowdown's until all the programs are up and running, if there is programs which you do not use all the time and can be started manually when needed then use msconfig to disable the startup entries on them (Start > Run > type msconfig and press OK, Click the startup tab and then disable any items you do not need running with Windows and then press Apply and OK)

Reboot and then post a new HijackThis log and the AVG AntiSpyware log.

Thanks

Andy

Thanks

Andy

Hi Chas,

Your HijackThis log looks clean now, there's still a potential problem with running two AV's and its worth running a full scan with AVG Anti-Spyware and posting back the log so we can see if there's remaining problems, did the suggestions in the link fix the hibernate issue ? there's currently about 45 files starting with Windows just in the 04 Run Key area then services which always run so the slowdown maybe due to that and the two AV's rather than any malware but the scan results should make that clearer

(Use the Posted Image button at the bottom of the page when you post as that doesnt quote mine)

Cheers

Andy

Nice to hear the Hibernate problem is fixed anyway :)

If you cannot remove Norton using the Add/Remove screen then Id suggest following the steps in this link

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...v=&osv_lvl=

its probably worth creating a system restore point before proceeding just incase you need to return to it, Click Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > SystemRestore

Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

let us know how it goes

Thanks. Have rid the Norton. What do you suggest about the "04" files you mentioned/
Chas

Hi Chas

Excuse the delay in replying, I couldnt get on the pc for most of yesterday, there's certainly nothing wrong with having so many items starting with Windows, I only mentioned them with you saying it was slow to startup in your first post, If the startup time is acceptable then they are fine to ignore.

These are the entries which Id regard as optional but its really a personal choice what you want starting with Windows, I dont recommend fixing anything with HijackThis as that will remove the run value from the registry, if you did want to disable any of these then use msconfig's startup tab so at least you can re-enable them again at a later stage if you want to,

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ATIPTA] "C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI Control Panel\atiptaxx.exe"
This is the control panel for ATI video cards which allows access to display resolution, colour depth settings etc... if the startup entry is removed the same options are available via Start -> Control Panel -> Display.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TPNF] C:\Program Files\TOSHIBA\TouchPad\TPTray.exe
Touchpad configuration tray icon for Toshiba laptops. Available via Start -> Control Panel

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SmoothView] C:\Program Files\TOSHIBA\TOSHIBA Zooming Utility\SmoothView.exe
TOSHIBA Zooming Utility - allows "automatic" zoom feature in some appications, like IE, MS-Office, Adobe-Reader and desktop icons.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CahootWebcard] C:\Program Files\cahoot webcard\CahootWebcard.exe /dontopenmycards
The Cahoot Webcard is a virtual card that allows you to use your Cahoot credit card online without ever having to expose your real card numbers over the web. It can be run manually when needed.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PE2CKFNT SE] C:\Program Files\Ulead Systems\Ulead Photo Express 2 SE\ChkFont.exe
Used to check whether the fonts are installed properly on your computer for a scanner.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
Application Scheduler installed along with Real Player. Once installed, it runs independently and doesnt need to start up automatically with Windows. To disable this so it doesnt return, goto Start Menu > All Programs > Real Player > Click Tools then Preferences. Goto The Automatic Services and uncheck all boxes. Do the same for the AutoUpdate & Message Center tabs and press OK then exit

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
QuickTime tray icon which doesnt need to start with Windows, Quicktime movies will still play automatically when they are run. To stop it coming back right click the blue Quicktime Icon in the system tray then click Quicktime Preferences or access Quicktimes options on the Control Panel. Goto the Advanced tab and Uncheck the 'Install Quicktime Icon In System Tray' box then press Apply and OK.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SpeedTouch USB Diagnostics] "C:\Program Files\Virgin.net Broadband\Dragdiag.exe" /icon
For an external high-speed modem. A diagnostic tool and can be run from the Start menu when required. The only reason it might be useful on startup is if you like seeing a status indicator on the taskbar

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [TOSCDSPD] C:\Program Files\TOSHIBA\TOSCDSPD\toscdspd.exe
Used to provide an acoustic silencer for the CD drive. If you are playing a music CD, or installing software, and the CD player vibrates noisily, you can invoke this program from the task bar and slow down the player. This results in less or no vibration and therefore less noise.

O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Reader Speed Launch.lnk = C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\reader_sl.exe
Speeds up the time it takes to load the Adobe_Reader application. Your choice, but not required for Adobe Reader to function properly

Hope that helps, if AVG AntiSpyware is finding any issues then please post back the scan log and we can take it from there,

Regards

Andy

Hi Chas,

Goto Start Menu then Run, type msconfig and then press ok, the system configuration utility screen should then open, Click the last tab which is named Startup and then uncheck any that you didnt want to autostart with Windows then click Apply and OK, it will then prompt you to reboot , after reboot the system configuration screen will open again but you can check the box for it not to show on the next restart and then just repeat the steps in the future sometime if you wanted to re-enable them,
