I started getting repeated messages every few minutes, a popup saying "McAfee Update Manager Service has encountered a problem and needs to close.". I also got the same popup for "Microsoft Works Update Detection has encountered a problem...".

I downloaded and ran a scan with AVG Anti-Spyware, which found several occurrences of:

Logger.Banker.amq

...so I quarantined these and rebooted. Re-running the scan found two more occurrences of the same file, so I quarantined these again. I was still getting the McAfee Update Manager popup problems.

I found your page "Spyware Removal Guide Version 2" and tried to carry out the steps given, with the following results:

Step 1 - Virus Removal: I usually use Firefox Version 2.0.0.1. I tried to start up Internet Explorer, but it would not start, instead it gave a popup saying "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close...". And because the BitDefender Online scanner needs an ActiveX component, I could not run the link from Firefox. So the malware seems to be stopping me from performing Step 1.

Step 2 - SuperAntispyware: I downloaded the program, and installed it. However, when I tried to run it, I got the now-familiar popup, saying this time "SuperAntispyware has encountered a problem and needs to close". So I could not perform Step 2.

Step 3 - The latest run of AVG Anti-Spyware is clean, as shown below in the log:

Welcome to the forum.

1. Create a new folder on your desktop. Name it sysclean.
2. Download both of these files and extract(unzip) them both to that new folder.

With both files unzipped in that new folder open the Sysclean folder and double click the sysclean file and press scan. Sysclean will now scan and automatically clean your computer of all possible viruses. Once sysclean is done it might ask you to reboot your computer. If it does not ask you to reboot do it anyway.

After the reboot open the sysclean folder and look for SYSCLEAN.LOG. Post that log onto the forum.

Post the sysclean log and a new hijackthis log.

Hi, and many thanks for helping me on this! I followed the instructions - ran sysclean, rebooted, ran hijackthis, and the logs follow. Unfortunately, I'm still getting the same error messages every few minutes, as before, so the problems remain.

Incidentally, if at any point you consider the best course is to do a full reinstall of Windows XP, I'm okay with that, though obviously it would be a long and tedious procedure. Thankfully I've copies of all my application data etc.

I think it might just be mcaffee causing these issues. I want you to uninstall all of the mcaffee programs from your computer. Then run ccleaner's issues scan 2-3 times and remove everything thing it finds.

Then try using your computer for a little while and let me see if you encounter any of these problems.(try using superantispyware and all the other programs and see if you get errors)

What we will do if it does turn out to be mcaffee is you could either reinstall it and see if the errors happen again or you could try some other(free programs) that are just as good(if not better) than mcaffee and will use less system resources as well.

Not good news, I'm afraid. I uninstalled all the McAfee virus scan and security centre, and went through a couple of reboot cycles. Ran ccleaner, which found loads of issues, so I let it fix them all. Ran it again, and it found some more, and repeated until no issues found. Then I rebooted again. And still the other prgrams are giving the "encountered a problem and must close" popup as before. This happens both with the eMusic Download Manager, and SuperAntiSpyware.

No, don't reformat just yet. Lets do a few things first.

First open hijackthis a do a scan. Then check off the following entry:

Then press fixed checked and exit hijackthis.

Now see if you can use Internet Explorer. If you can I want you to run this scan and post the log.

Run Kaspersky WebScanner

• Please go HERE and click Kaspersky Online Scanner
  
• Read and Accept the Agreement
  
• You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  
• If you see a Windows dialog asking if you want to install this software, click the Install button.
  
• The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files,
  
• When the "Update progress" line changes to "Ready" and the "NEXT ->" button becomes available, please click on it.
  
• Click on the Scan Settings button, and in the next window select the Extended database, and click Ok.
  
• Under "Please select a target to scan:", click My Computer to start the scan.
  
• When the scan is finished, click the "Save as Text" button, and save the file as kavscan.txt to your Desktop, close the Kaspersky On-line Scanner window.
  
• Paste kaspersky log onto forum.

I used Hijackthis to fix and remove the entry you specified. However, trying to run Internet Explorer still gives me the "Internet Explorer has detected a problem and needs to close" popup. So I still can't run IE, and therefore cannot run the Kaspersky WebScanner.

Lets try something a little different.

Uzip the file and double click on dial a fix. Then click the green arrows at the bottom and press go. Let it run and when its finished try the kaspersky scan.

Nope, still can't open Internet Explorer. It still gives the "Internet Explorer has detected a problem and needs to close" popup, exactly as before. The dial-a-fix program had downloaded and run without a problem, though.

On a hunch, I went to the Microsoft downloads site, and downloaded IE7 (I'd previously still been using IE6, since I mainly use Firefox). This installed, removing IE6 in the process. When I tried to run IE7, success! So I'm presently starting to run the Kaspersky Online Scanner. Will post log when it finishes...

Alright, run ccleaner to clear your temp files.(that should get rid of the one infection Kaspersky found.)

After that see if you can run some of those programs that were crashing originally.

Time for a smiley, I think:

I ran ccleaner (in the default "cleaner" mode - was that right?). I then ran some of the previous "problem" programs:

Internet Explorer - IE7 - now works fine (as reported earlier).

Using eMusic Download Manager to download mp3s from eMusic.com now works fine - it was previously hitting the "...encountered a problem..." popups.

iTunes works fine now - previously, it would open, then close down a couple of seconds later, without any message.

Also, since uninstalling McAfee Virusscan, I've added AVG AnitiVirus Free Edition to the AVG Anti-Spyware you'd previously asked me to install. It does indeed seem less of a resource-hog than McAfee VirusScan, so I think this is the security configuration I'll keep for all my home machines.

So, I'm cautiously optimitic now, which is a lot better than the bleak panic of a few days ago!

Are there any scans I should now run, just as a (hopefully) final check?

Also, when this is all over, do you take PayPal donations for this brilliant service you offer?
