I found this BHO and SSV Helper when I was checking ewido browser plug-ins. I don't know much about this sort of thing, but know that BHOs can be, but aren't necessarily, bad things. I googled this one and found that some site technicians, when viewing a hijack log, said to remove java runtime environment. Others never mentioned it.
With ewido browser plug-ins, there's usually a green check mark next to them, meaning they're ok, but with the java plug-in that's there, it's displaying a question mark.
SSVHelper Class {761497BB-D6F0-462C-B6EB-D4DAF1D92D43}
Java Plug-In 1.5.0_09 {CAFEEFAC-0015-0000-0009-ABCDEFFEDCBC}
I googled the CLSID for the plug-in, and all but 2 entries were in other languages.
So, 2 questions: are they safe? and what specifically are they doing, in layman's terms, please.
thanks! sonsie

Both are installed and used by Sun Java RunTime Environment. They're safe because Sun Java RunTime Environment doesn't install any adware, malware, spyware, etc.
In Internet Explorer 7 it will even give a description of those in:
Internet Properties -> Programs -> Manage add-ons

The analysis of HijackThis logs, and prescribed remedies, are specific to each computer, and conducted by cyber-wizards with a deep knowledge of magic.
So recommended actions are for the log posted and only that log. Never be tempted to run your own repair based on viewing someone elses, even if the problem appears similar. Been there. Had to re-install.
