This is what I had to do on my previous XP install to get the clipboard to function, although I'm not certain it's exactly the problem you're having, worth a try?
1. Start, Run, type in: services.msc
2. Scroll down to and then double click upon: ClipBook
3. Set it to Manual if it's currently set at Disabled.
If it's already set to Manual try setting it to Automatic, then Start the service if it isn't running.

Strange how it works on this install of XP on my system as I noticed it's disabled, yet it loads without any error dialogs unlike my previous XP install when I had to change it to Automatic. Windows bug?

Edit:
ClipBook may require Network DDE and Network DDE DSDM to be enabled in services.msc too if I'm remembering correctly.
Complexity of incoherent design.

Hi Andavari,I trust you are feeling better?
Right I've tried everything you suggested,no difference, I can select text and choose copy but,it will not paste into word or notepad, option is greyed out.

thanks MikeW for your reply,
Had a look in the registry (scary place) found the Applnit-DLLs and there is no value listed on the right of it .
not too sure what to do now  as registries are something i know basically nothing about.

Yeah I'm feeling better but I have to take it easy for the next several months, e.g.; not physical exhaustion, cuts, or bruises as that can land me right back into the hospital.

Back on topic:
I don't know how to fix the copy and paste problem so I have no idea of how to fix it since my suggestion didn't work, obviously the problem I had previously isn't the same you're experiencing so I'd recommend following MikeW's recommendations and to search Microsoft's support pages for topics regarding it: http://support.microsoft.com/

Go to start>run and type in "clipbrd.exe".(no quotes)
A window should pop up that looks sorta like notepad. Its the clipboard viewer.

Try copying some text and see if it appears in the viewer.

Also it might be a good idea to just give dial a fix a try. If you don't know what that is download it here:
http://djlizard.net/...-v0.60.0.24.zip

Unzip it and open it up. Then click the green arrows and then press go. :)
This just corrects a few windows things that can get fouled up by random things. Who knows it might fix your problem.

If not let me know if you can see text copied in the clipboard viewer.

Sometimes this happens if your mouse becomes busted, and then the right click dosn't always work.
So, I'd suggest hooking up another mouse and see if this helps. B)

Rridgely, thanks for the replies I'd already tried dial-a-fix and that didn't work, also tried your other suggestion start>run and typing in clipbrd.exe, and that doesn't work either :( haven't got a clue what to do now.any more ideas?
Mushu 13 suggested that my mouse could be a problem as i recently purchased a new one, I know that is not the problem as I was having this problem before .

Once you saw the text in the view did you try to paste it into a word processor? If so did it work?

Maybe some tweaking or security program disabled it making it a restriction?

I see from your HJK log that you have Newnet a know cause of this problem

New.net
New.net is malware that installs itself on Windows machines as a Firefox extension when certain other applications are installed onto the system. New.net is meant to allow the user to access new.net-specific addresses, but it also interferes with the clipboard. It can't be uninstalled from within Firefox.

New.net provides a removal tool. It can also be removed with anti-spyware programs such as Spybot or Microsoft Anti-Spyware.

Applications that bundle New.net

RealNetworks (RealOne Player)
Babylon
BikiniDesk
Cydoor (LingoWare)
gDivx
Go!Zilla
Grokster
iMesh
KaZaA
Mindset Interactive (NetPalNow)"
