Just noticed last night my PC wont play Midi files anymore - they load and play but no sound... last time i had this is when i had both RealPlayer and Windows media player opened/running at the same time, but this isn't the case. any ideas?

Have you opened your volume control panel and checked to see that none of the mute boxes are ticked? ( I know it's an obvious one, but sometimes we overlook them!)
If you are using WMP to play them, open it, tools, options, file types tab, and make sure MIDI is ticked.

Problem solved!
as it turned out - a couple of boxes in my volume CP were muted..
