No joke there. My GF's parents computer is the same. I ran all kinds of scanners BitDefender online scanner to... Ewido and boy... was their computer Infected. Though, after all the fixing and such they still get pop-up Ad's *Even with Maxthon. IDK... what to do. Thread located Here. I can't find the source of what's causing the problem. I'm out of Ideas. I should just formatt the dang thing if they'd let me
Make sure you turn off system restore before you do the scans also run AdWares updated and in full system scan some things have to be removed on the reboot it will let you know if thats required I also use the free program SUPERAntiSpyware it seem to fine alot more. A Square free is also a good one to use but to be honest a PC that infected just need to be reformated to make sure.

I will always think part of the malware infestation blame needs to go directly towards computer manufacturers, they complain about most of their tech support calls being about infections - yet they constantly put time-out or outdated versions of security software on their systems. I haven't seen one as of yet Dell, Gateway, etc., that can cut a deal/license with an AV company like Grisoft or Avira to have full featured free antivirus on the system from the get go without the time-out one's like Norton, McAfee, etc., which become useless hard disk junk if not purchased typically within 90 days. The same would go for not having any freeware anti-spyware on the system such as Ad-aware, Spybot-S&D, etc.
It seems all to easy of a fix if only adequate protection was installed by default.

Can I ask why you would install the anti-spyware/virus programs last? Because, not to sound pessimistic or anything, but while res45 is updating, he could get an infection, such as a trojan. Is your ideology that you should get the basics installed, so when the ant-ivirus/spyware (etc.) programs are installed, they will only block things from then on out, and not worry about what's already installed?
Oh, if you need to wipe your harddrive, I highly recommend the free version of Active Killdisk. It is a very thorough cleaner that wipes EVERYTHING - but, as a warning, once you wipe it, no information is retrievable . Also, it is not a fast job, but it blows everything off. Get it at Active KillDisk. Just be sure you have a program to burn it as an ISO image...wait, you can load it onto a floppy I believe, you just need to make sure the computer's BIOS are set to boot from the floppy drive first.

I think it's just a matter of tastes what to install first, but formatting would have to come first.
I would however start out by:
1. Formatting.
2. Install the WinXP SP2 update.
3. Install Microsoft Office.
4. Anti-virus, and the needed anti-spyware programs while at it.
5. Visit Microsoft Updates to download two years worth of Windows and Office updates since SP2.
6. Install third-party software, e.g.; browsers, media players, etc.

Thats how I pretty much do my reinstalls but I usually install and update my antivirus and spyware programs right after the reformatt and SP2 install. I like to be protected right from the start. Will be nice when SP3 finally comes out I need to look into slipstreaming and see if thats an option so I can make up a current SPak/CD.

I wouldn't install any office suite, but if I did, it would be OpenOffice not Microsoft Office.
http://www.openoffice.org/
Also, I heard an unpatched/unprotected Windows system, gets infected avg in less than 15 minutes after installation. I would update and protect it as fast as possible.
