I am working on a Windows 98 PC that had Norton AV 2001 installed. Now, NAV has been partially uninstalled, however on boot there is now an error message that says NAV Auto-Protect cannot find virus definitions. Hitting enter allows the computer to boot into Windows, but the error is annoying. Is it possible to manually remove this from the system startup?

If you go to control panel are you able to click disable next to the notice that says >Auto Protect is enabled on your system?

As MikeW suggested, use the SymNRT to totally clean the system of Norton/Symantec products. You'll no longer get those annoying popups.

As Malcom said he had partially uninstalled Norton, I took this to mean he was retaining other elements of the suite which is why I posted the first link.

Had being past tense. Also, in his original post; everything he refers to is about Norton Anti-Virus which had been installed on the Windows 98 machine, but has since been uninstalled.

Unfortunately with the Norton/Symantec products, they leave behind many traces of the application(s) that were once installed. From what he has described, that would appear to be the case here. Using SymNRT would effectively remove all of the leftover traces of any Norton/Symantec product.

I thought that symNRT didn't remove 2001 Norton AV, and to use Rnav 2003 for earlier versions such as this one.

Though SymNRT says it will remove Norton AV 2003-2006, it can still remove some parts.

In addition, Rnav2003.exe

Rnav2003.exe does not remove the following items:

• The files or registry keys for the virus definitions
  
• Subscription information
  
• Entries in Windows Scheduled Tasks
  
• Other shared files

This article will tell you how to remove Norton Anti-Virus 2003 or earlier.

Symantec/Norton products are notorious for not wanting to cleanly uninstall. I would stay away from everything from Symantec/Norton.
Norton Commander 5.0 that is 10 year olds or so is pretty cool though.
