Here's my new log. I had this on my system:

Process Name: Adware.W32.SpyFalcon

Ran Spybot (which needed a reboot and 2nd pass), which cleared these exe's.

IE still has a non-default home page that I cant change (some security site: http://www.syssecuritysite.com/)

I'm guessing I'm not clear if I cant change the defaults. How does my log look?

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Can you also generate a list of the Add/Remove screen entries to make sure there is no problems showing

Open Hijackthis, Choose Open the misc tools section
Then click the Open Uninstall Manager... button.
The Add/Remove Programs Manager panel should appear.
In this panel click the Save list button.
Save the uninstall_list.txt file to your desktop and copy and paste the contents back in your next reply.

Please then post back the Smitfraudfix report and the uninstall list

Hi Ivegottheskill

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".


The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart anyway into normal Windows. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

This entry points to an online crash analysis page from Microsoft so it can be fixed using HijackThis

Run a final scan with PandaActive scan to be sure there is no junk remaining.

Panda Activescan.

Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan
(Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When the download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location so you can post it back.

Post it back if it detects any malware (except cookies)

Then clear the System Restore points:

To clear all the infected System Restore points Click :

Start Menu > All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore

Press OK. Choose 'Create a Restore Point' then Next. Name it and press 'Create' then when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click 'Close'

Next goto Start Menu > Run > type

cleanmgr

click OK, when Disk Cleanup opens goto the 'More Options' tab and press 'Cleanup' on the system restore area which will remove all the restore points except the one we just created.

I've tried to run the scan 3 times, but it keeps getting jammed on some openoffice.msi file that I cant find (must be scanning inside archives)

It finds 3 spyware and 1 virus at this stage, but I cant get it to complete the test and tell me where they are.

Id suggest trying a different scan if that's the case as there's not many options if it refuses to complete, The spyware could just be cookies but I couldnt comment on the Virus detection without seeing the results

Download Ewido Anti-Spyware
  • Load Ewido and then click the Update tab at the top. Under Manual Update click Start update.

  • After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
  • Click on the Scanner tab at the top and then click on Complete System Scan
  • Ewido will list any infections found on the left, when the scan has finished, it will automatically set the recommended action. Click the Apply all actions button. Ewido will then display "All actions have been applied" on the right.
  • Click on "Save Report", then "Save Report As". This will create a text file which you can then save to the Desktop and post back
If you wanted to run another Virus scanner try Kaspersky

Run Kaspersky WebScanner
  • Please go HERE and click Kaspersky Online Scanner
  • Read and Accept the Agreement
  • You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • If you see a Windows dialog asking if you want to install this software, click the Install button.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files,
  • When the "Update progress" line changes to "Ready" and the "NEXT ->" button becomes available, please click on it.
  • Click on the Scan Settings button, and in the next window select the Extended database, and click Ok.
  • Under "Please select a target to scan:", click My Computer to start the scan.
  • When the scan is finished, click the "Save as Text" button, and save the file as kavscan.txt to your Desktop, close the Kaspersky On-line Scanner window.
Let us know if they detect any malware (except cookies) or if you have any problems running them.

Ok, thanks

I think I'm clear now. Ewido and Kaspersky found some items I've gotten rid of (mostly stuff in NOD32's quarantine)

The only thing now is at start up, I get a Windows XP Critical Stop error sound. No message is displayed and I don't notice any other problems however

SpyFalcon is a rouge anti-spyware application. A piece of spyware that poses as an anti-spyware application.

It is pretty damn hard to get rid off.

Ewido is a good idea. HijackThis is helpful too.

I wouldnt know where to start for the Critical Stop sound when Windows Loads. It could indicate a program is failing to load correctly so you could check the Event Viewer (Start Menu > Run > Type eventvwr) then press OK and see if its recording any errors on the Application or System tabs each time it sounds.

You should be able to disable the Critical Stop sound by going to Start Menu > Control Panel > double click Sounds

Goto the Sounds Tab, and then check for an area called Program Events. Scroll down to Critical Stop then left click the entry. Under the Sounds options change it from Windows XP Critical Stop.wav to (None) then click Apply and OK

Let us know if you find any errors that might be connected, if your not sure then open EventViewer and right click the Application and System tab and choose Clear All Events (No need to save them when prompted) that way it will be easier to see if any new errors are being recorded when it happens.

Ok, I cleared both logs and rebooted, still got the sound and checked. I found 3 entries in the System event log, 1 error and 2 warnings:

The error was for NETLOGON:

The two warnings were from Windows Defender, telling me that these two files are "spyware or other potentially unwanted software"

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp\Adobe Acrobat Speed Launcher.lnk

Both files are fine, its unusual that Windows Defender records events in this way, nothing showed up when I ran a system scan.

The culprit may be the NETLOGON error then

For the NetLogon error

Goto Start > Run > Type

Services.msc

When the services screen opens scroll down to Net Logon and double click it to open the properties pane (or right click and choose properties) , On the Service Status: click Stop then change the Startup Type from Automatic to Manual and click Apply and OK


For Windows Defender, there isnt much you can do about that except to report it on the beta newsgroups Here,

There really is a rule where beta software is concerned that the company who make it are not responsible for any damage it might cause to your system. This will not happen often but its something that should be considered when you agree to take part in beta testing.

Microsoft express that in the EULA Here

I have included afew recommended steps below to help protect your computer from future malware infections.

Keep Ewido on the system as it shows its a 30 day trial but it works fine after that has expired as a "On-Demand" scanner and remover which you can manually update and use anytime.

In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs if they are not already installed:

Ad-Aware

A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found Here

Please make sure to run your Antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date and also make sure your windows has the latest updates: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
