Hi
Running Acer Aspire T130
Windows XP home
Internet Explorer6

Since a computer crash, I had to reboot the computer from Acer's boot CD. The computer is now going well, except for an irritation using Internet Explorer. I cannot change the home page from Acer's own web page. I have tried through Tools/Internet Options. It allows the change, but as soon as you come out of the tools menu it changes back. I have also tried changing it through the Spywareblaster program, but there it would not allow the change at all.
I have run the recommended antispyware programs without effect on this.
Can anyone please help.
Thanks
David

Hi David, Welcome to the forum

First try disabling Windows Defender and then changing the homepage in case its that interfering.

Open Windows Defender.
Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.

After checking this re-enable the Real-time Protection again

If the homepage still changes Open Hijack This and press the Config button

On the Main Tab, set the homepage you want to use in the Default Start Page area.

Run Hijack This and choose Do A System Scan then place a check next to these entries

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http:// global.acer.com/
O14 - IERESET.INF: START_PAGE_URL=http://global.acer.com/

Close all open browser and other windows except for Hijack This and press the Fix Checked button

let us know if you can then change the homepage without it returning to acer, if not reboot into safe mode and then try to change the setting from there (reboot and tap the F8 key and choose safe mode from the list)

There's also a support page from MS here with tips to remove a homepage but its more aimed at malicious programs rather than genuine companies.

http://support.micro...b;EN-US;Q320159

You should also remove the version of Java installed as its very old and is vulnerable to some infections

Goto Start Menu > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and remove any versions of Java Runtime Environment (J2SE) that are in the list, reboot and download the latest version from Here

Let us know how it goes

Andy

Hi Andy

Did as you suggested.
I had to go into safe mode to change the Home Page but it was then successful! Excellent.
After a reboot I have tried changing the home page again and it will not change. The only way seems to be in safe mode. Is there a way of correcting this? If not I can certainly live with this as it is now.
I have also updated my Java software.
Thanks again
David

Hi Dave

Im really not sure why you cannot change the homepage, There is some indications that a bug in a new version of Zone Alarm can block the change but I cannot be sure if that is the cause on yours or if its something Acer have done, the HijackThis log should show if there had been any IE Restrictions put in place to prevent you changing the homepage and they would show as 06 Restrictions which are not present so its difficult to say at this stage.

There was a log on another forum where they couldnt change the homepage from MSN but they fixed it by returning ZoneAlarm to an older version

In your case it may be unrelated and could be a change Acer have made so if it continues to be a problem it may be best contacting acer to see what they suggest

Abit more info on the ZoneAlarm issue

http://forums.spywar...showtopic=78663

Quoting the same user who posted the above topic

Quote

The newest release prevents users from changing their IE homepage (this can be turned off if you have ZoneAlarm pro; the bug is that free users have this option enabled by default and have no way of disabling it).

EDIT: I just installed the latest version and it does lock the homepage, as well as programs hanging and IE speed slowing right down :(

I now do not have Zone Alarm installed so the issue is fixed but I will just install an old version I have saved as I was happy with that

Andy

Thanks for your help.
I have removed the latest version of Zonealarm (6.5.722) and reinstalled an older version (6.1.744), and 'Hey Presto' all is resolved.
I am sure that Zonelabs will correct the glitch, but for the meantime I am happy with the older version.
Thanks again.
David

I am having the same Problem with Acer 3100 Laptop. My problem started when I accidentally tried to boot from Diagnotic Partition, I suspect. I installed Xandos Linux and , I think that boot manager was giving option to boot from Diagnostic perition. I deleted Diagnostic pertition and still cant change the IE home page. As another user reported, problem could be in Zone Alarm. I am gonna delete and use another firewall and see if that does it. I have a ghost image, and loaded the ghost image of the backup, and I still have the problem, although it wasn't there when I made the ghost image, that is where I suspected something with the diagnostic partition. Aggrevating problem to say the least!
