when i go to windows update, there is a windows genuine advantage to download which it says i need, but it always fails to download (without a reason) whenever i attempt. my windows software IS genuine, and just wondering if there is a conflict somewhere. i tried it without my firewall on, same problem happened. ive ran everything for virus/spyware/etc. nothing.

heres my log, and thanks!:

Hi LOTW

The log looks fine, You have the WgaLogon.dll showing so Microsoft should already know the OS is genuine as that file contacts MS to verify its a genuine installation.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k

The above line in your log indicates there has recently been a error on your system, dumprep.exe is Microsoft's fault logging software and when errors happen this program will write the details to a text file and request the information be sent to Microsoft (the entry can be fixed if it remains in the log after a reboot)

Can you goto Start Menu > My Computer > C:\Drive > Windows and check in the Windows folder for a text file named WindowsUpdate.log. Open the log and see if its recorded any errors around the time you tried to visit Windows Updates as it might show what the problem is.

This page has alot of frequently asked questions about Genuine Advantage

http://www.microsoft...nloads/faq.aspx

And this part may be useful

Q What should I do if I have a problem with the validation process?

A: If you cannot resolve your problem using this FAQ or the (English-language only) Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic site troubleshooting tools, use the Contact Us link at the bottom of Microsoft Download Center or Microsoft Genuine site pages to request additional assistance. For English-speaking users, you may also access the Microsoft Genuine Advantage Forum for additional discussion and user-to-user support for Microsoft Genuine Advantage programs.

Hope that helps

Andy

I think he's referring to the WGA that you must download before accessing Windows Update itself. Anything could affect his ability to download it, such as BITS, etc. Thus, I suggest Dial-a-fix section #3, and failing that, Flush SoftwareDistribution.
