HOW TO USE
Simply run the standalone program "StartBtn.exe" and then type your desirable label in the "New Label" field. By pressing the <Enter> key, or clicking on the "Rename It" button, the [Start] button will rename with the new Label.
You can also rename the [Start] button by running the file "StartBtn.exe" from the MS-DOS command prompt. To do this, you must go the directory which you have been installed the application, use this sysnax to run the program.
Usage:
StartBtn.exe NewLabel
which NewLabel parameter is the new label for the [Start] button.
Example:
StartBtn Begin
Changes label of the [Start] to "Begin".
This can be most useful when you want to rename the [Start] button at the Windows startup.

can you say what file he has run and where you get the startbtn.exe file from so I can test it, Its possible the explorer.exe file has been modified and some of the strings inside the file have been changed but If he has lost the start button then something may of gone wrong with editing explorer.exe if that is what the program changes, I know its possible to edit the start menu text and image by using a program called resource hacker and editing the contents of the explorer file but I have never tried it as My start button looks fine the way it is

Ask your friend what file he got to make the change, If he doesnt know but still has the file then right click it and choose Send To then compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a copy of it inside the zipped file which you can then add as an attachment here. It maybe best if you both start saving the tweak/regfix pages to your favorites or copy and pasting the address into notepad so we can help you when it goes wrong
I couldnt find any reference to Startbtn.exe on the Kelly's Korner site but I only checked it quickly then thought its easier to ask you where the file is from. Im quite happy to run the regfixes or files on my own system so I can see what changes they make but its difficult to know whats happened until I see the files.

Take care using all these regfixes and tweaks as you may end up having to reinstall Windows if you make any mistakes, If you get a regfix (.reg) then right click and choose EDIT so at least you know whats its going to do. If its a batch script (.bat) you can also right click and choose EDIT to see the contents, If its an executable file (.exe) file you need to fully understand what changes its making before running it and create a system restore point as a backup.

The only reason I posted that tool was because you made changes and you were not sure what any of them were and with the tool coming from the same site its possible it could of reversed what you did, I didnt mean you should use it and click anything because there is thousands of values in the registry and it was only a lucky guess that we managed to find the changes in your policy keys last night. I personally do not think you should run any regfixes or tweaks on your machine without knowing exactly what it does, if you do then you need to at least create a restore point and save the file so the changes can be reversed if it causes problems. I know there is very useful scripts on that site but I wouldnt recommend anyone uses them unless they are fully aware why its needed and what its going to do to your system.
If you do it again at least you can't blame me now

i also figured out that this uses the file: C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe
its really hard to do using a program such as registry hacker.

Ive just tried it on my test machine and it doesnt work, It renames it but If I right click the System Tray and choose Task Manager it returns to Start, Same if I stop explorer.exe and restart it, I wouldnt run it on my main pc as Im happy with the start menu name but if its doing the same for you then somethings not right with the program. The homepage in the help file doesnt work and it shows it was last updated in 2002 so Id guess its not compatible with Service Pack 2
If it does work try Changing the name to STOP as it may make your system more secure
Maybe contact the Author of the program using the email in the html file if it keeps returning to Start on yours but I doubt he will be able to help if its not been updated for more than 4 years.
