They say it's hard to judge a book by its cover. We'd argue that it's even harder to judge the safety of a Web site by its looks.

Think you can sniff out which sites are adware & spyware free? Take our spyware quiz and see.

Spyware Quiz

I scored a bit above average so my guessing was ok.

Don't use Siteadvisor myself as my other FF plugins do a decent job.

5 out of 8. Tightrope Walker.

For every occurence of trial, demo, shareware, screensaver, smiley etc its an indication of something bad. For every website that has popups, popunders, banners, or floats then its an indication that something is bad.

You can pick up a vibe from websites, most of those websites send out a negative vibe.

When there are no commercials, no mention of any partners, and when software offered is for free and is open-source then that sends me good vibe. I get most of my software from SourceForge.net

But there is a difference between going to the website and seeing a picture of it. I couldn't always tell by just looking.

I also use "NoScript" for Firefox, and I never download free games or screensavers (anymore).

If I download any free software it'll be from Major Geeks.

5 out of 8. Some were actually pretty easy (especially BearShare, Smiley Source...).

Look for Sponsored Downloads, Bundles (it even says so on Smiley Source) etc...

Nice quiz, I'm gonna share this around =)

Boy what a shock - they all looked OK.

I did get 6 out of the 8 correct - but more by good luck than knowledge.

I seldom surf the web for this type of downloads - AND AM I GLAD I DON'T as I would probably get infected.

Is SiteAdvisor mentioned in one of the above posts any good or just wishful thinking? How does it determine the safety of any site?

More feedback on it would be appreciated.

I think SiteAdvisor is a great idea but it has some work to do before its really effective, It works great with main Adware sites but it sometimes misses some of the nasty websites as they either tend to keep popping up with new domain names or SiteAdvisor may not of scanned the site for problems,

Another issue is it doesnt appear to check a site more than once so the site may of been clean when it was scanned, but has since added alot of malicious files which SiteAdvisor will not detect as it bases its results on when it first viewed the page.

Its a great addition to anyones protection products though as it will in most cases give you a good idea of whats on a webpage
