ya, it can read regular cd's like software, music, but just not blank cd's. heres the error i get...

well, ive reinstalled windows and its still like that. any ideas?

You said it's a CD-ROM ... if it is, it can't read a blank CD.

well, it has to be able to read it if im gonna write to it. all my writing programs say theres no cd in the drive

I repeat ... You said it' a CD-ROM. ROM means Read Only Memory. To write to a CD you need a CD (or DVD) writer.

Glenn's right. If the drive could read/write blank disks, it would be a CD-RW (re-writeable) drive, not a CD-ROM (read-only memory) drive. Since a CD-ROM drive can't write on a blank disk, what would be the point of it recognizing that disk in the first place, since it wouldn't be able to put anything on it anyway?

You can purchase decent internal CD burners for $20-30 these days, so you may want to consider that. But your current hardware just won't work, no matter what software you get.

Have you considered that it may be the brand of blank CD's you are using? Have you tried the blanks in another computer?
