After doing a repair install, I noticed that my computer no longer recognizes my 5th generation iPod "video".

I tried:

- Doing a reset on the iPod.
- Reinstalling iTunes.
- Uninstalling the drivers which Windows think is a USB mass storage device.
- Trying another USB 2.0 port.

Still doesn't work.

Have you tried rebooting Windows?

I did it numerous times.

Here's another screenshot; ironically enough, Windows does detect the iPod but not explorer.exe nor itunes.exe.

JACOB is my iPod, don't ask. :P

It worked fine before the repair install.

Try typing explorer.exe in the run box, and hit okay.

One more thing, are your drivers up-to-date? After a repair install you need to update your drivers again.

All my drivers were already up to date after the repair install.

I just reinstalled my motherboard's drivers just to make sure. (ASUS A8N-SLI nVIDIA nForce 4)

Some people recommended that I download usbstor.sys and usbstor.inf

How do I exactly install those ?

You won't need those (because as you can see, it's already detected as a mass storage device).

I had to do a repair install myself recently to repair a COM+ subsystem problem (don't ask) and I got the same result you are getting.

I ended up having to do a double reset on the iPod, uninstall iTunes and Quicktime, and re-install the latest iPod updater (even though I had it installed already) and then reinstall iTunes and Quicktime. After launching the iPod updater, I connected my iPod, it saw it, and from then on, so did iTunes.

Ditto. Manners FTW!

Of course, this is coming from lokoike, an unmannered, uncivilized swine of a human being, but still, it's the thought that counts.

Give Andavari lots of money and maybe even consider getting K a DVD-RW drive.

If you can get my iPod connection issues fixed, okay.

Seriously, thank you all for trying.

The one who will actually fix it will get a bag of cookies though.

Running out of ideas...

Is all of the audio/video on your iPod backed up somewhere, such as your computer's HD? If so, my only suggestion is to format your iPod and then try connecting it and seeing if iTunes picks up on it then.

I would imagine that it came with its own formatting software, but if not, don't try this with Windows' format utility until you know that it won't adversly affect the iPod. I don't know if it does or not, since I don't own an iPod, but I have heard that defragging an iPod with Windows' defrag utility is bad, so it would be best to make sure.

If you aren't sure whether or not you can safely format it, try PMing DJ, since apparently he owns one. I'm sure he would know. :)

I wanted to format it but the utility to actually format it does not detect it.

I noticed that I can actually access the drive with "explore" if I manually assing it a drive letter.

Man, that really sucks!

I guess the best thing to find out then is if using Windows' format utility is okay to use, since Windows still sees the drive.
