I've got ccleaner version 1.22.142 and ewido security suite 3.5 (which I can't seem to update its definitions), not sure if they will help.

Can you please do the following.

===============

Please visit at least two of the following sites for an online virus scan:

BitDefender Free Online Virus Scan
http://www.bitdefend...can/licence.php
Make sure you tick AutoClean under Scan Options.

Panda ActiveScan
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/co...n_principal.htm
Make sure you tick Disinfect automatically under Scan Options.

Housecall at TrendMicro
http://housecall.tre.../start_corp.asp
Make sure you tick Auto Clean.
When it completes, post back the full filename of any files that cannot be cleaned or deleted.

eTrust Antivirus Web Scanner
http://www3.ca.com/s...sinfo/scan.aspx

===============

Let's look for, and delete, any program segments (prefetches) that might be present, and are associated with the 'problems' we're trying to remove from your PC. To do this, let's:

1) Click "Start | Search", then search for each of these program's base name(s), in all files and folders:

tool2.exe*

2) Then if any are found in the 'prefetch' folder, delete them.

Look closely, since the 'base' name will have a bunch of random numbers and letters attached to it.

===============

Run HiJackThis then:

1. Click "Open the Misc Tools Section"
2. Click "Open Process manager"

-

Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate (if present) and click on (highlight) each of the following:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\paytime.exe
C:\WINDOWS\tool2.exe
C:\winstall.exe

Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click "Kill process". Now, click "Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.

===============

Scan with HiJackThis, click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = c:\secure32.html
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = c:\secure32.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = c:\secure32.html
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = c:\secure32.html
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = c:\secure32.html
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = c:\secure32.html

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=explorer.exe "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Folders\ibm00001.exe"

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PayTime] C:\WINDOWS\System32\paytime.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [bxproxy] C:\WINDOWS\bxproxy.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Windows installer] C:\winstall.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [PayTime] C:\WINDOWS\System32\paytime.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Shell] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Folders\ibm00001.exe"
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [bxproxy] C:\WINDOWS\bxproxy.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Digimax Viewer 1.0.lnk = ?

Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure you are able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

files...

C:\WINDOWS\System32\paytime.exe
C:\WINDOWS\tool2.exe
C:\winstall.exe
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Folders\ibm00001.exe
C:\WINDOWS\bxproxy.exe

-

Note that some of these file(s)/folder(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in "Safe Mode".

-

Reboot.

===============

After rebooting, rescan with hijackthis and post back a new log. Please let me know how your pc is now.

Hi Crunchie,

I've did everything and this is what happened:

1) I wasn't able to delete the byproxy.exe in WINDOWS, so I tried deleting it in Safe Mode but the file seemed to have disappeared. After rebooting, I can't seem to find it by manually locating it or by searching for it.

2) My McAfee recognises HijackThis.exe as a generic worm and I'm not able to do a final scan and submit a new log. I've tried disabling McAfee but no use.

3) Despite HijackThis.exe can't work, the homepage of my IE is not the spyware ad anymore, no more balloons popping up telling me to rectify my spyware problem, the CPU usage is not maxed out and its healthy.

I've used Panda and eTrust AV scanner, with eTrust cleaning out most of my mal-ware and Panda cleaning files infected with viruses. I skipped Trendmicro and Bitdefender cuz downloading of virus definitions took so long that I timed out.

So I guess it will be better if I'm able to provide you with a final HJT log, but how do I go abt getting HijackThis.exe installed properly without it triggering off my McAfee??

Thanks!

I thought that problem with McAfee had been rectified. It is apparently the fourth time it has picked up hijackthis as a generic worm.
How did you manage to post the previous log? If McAfee is truly disabled you should be able to use hijackthis.

Congratulations! Your log looks clean - good work!

===============

Now that your PC is clean you need to follow these easy steps to keeping it this way:

Secure your Internet Explorer by going here and following the instructions there.

Better yet, use an alternative browser! Download FireFox and give it a run. It is far more secure than Internet Explorer. Or, you can get Opera which in my opinion, is better still.

Use a firewall to help prevent your PC's control being usurped by undesireables. There is a link to a good, free firewall in my signature.

Install and keep updated, Ad-Aware SE, and Spybot S&D.
Run them both on a regular basis, following the manufacturer's recommendations.

Install an anti-virus. There are some good, free AV's available today. Make sure that it is updated regularly and have it scan your system often.

Check for Windows Updates. Microsoft regularly post updates for your systems safe running. Make sure to take advantage of this. Reboot when installed and return to make sure there are no others.

Clear your Temp folders.
Clear out your Temporary internet files and other temp files.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel >Internet Options.

Under the General tab click the Delete temporary internet files,
delete all Offline content as well. Clear out Cookies.

Also, go to Start > Find/search > Files or folders > in the named box, type: *.tmp and choose Edit > select all -> File > delete.

Empty/delete the entire contents of the C:\Windows\temp folder and C:\temp folder, if you have one. (Contents but not the folder itself.)

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\

In order to view these files you may have to select 'show hidden files/folders.' Instructions on how to here.

Empty the Recycle Bin.

For XP users.
After something like this it is a good idea to Flush the Restore Points and start fresh.
To flush the XP system Restore Points.

Go to Start>Run and type msconfig. Press enter.

When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings link on the left.

Check the box labelled 'Turn off System restore'.

Reboot. Go back in and Turn System Restore Back on. A new Restore Point will be created.

Note that all previous restore points will be lost.

If you have any more problems, post back.

Happy surfing,

crunchie.

Well, seems like one of my NY resolutions have come true! Thanks for your help again Crunchie!

I downloaded Ewido and its whole signature database and ran it on my machine and still there were infected files and trojan and other stuff. I only managed to clear all of it after 3 runs. I guess it's bcuz my machine is still not secure to an optimum level, and I'm still having problems trying to update my XP from a SP1 to the SP2. Any advce for that??

The crap thing abt Ewido is that it is only useful for the first 14 days, thereafter it'll become obsolete, so I kept the four links you listed for future periodic scans. The BitDefender is kinda kickass as it cleared much s**t from my machine but not thoroughly though, with the remaining nonsense cleared using Ewido. Thanks again for the suggestions on Ad-Aware and Spybot. :)

Is there a need to purchase licenses for Ad-Aware and Spybot?

Cheers

Adaware and Spybot are both freeware :). Ewido can still be updated after the 14 day trial period and also still scan for and remove malware :). The only thing you lose is the real-time protection.
Can you download the entire service pack 2 for networks and install it that way? It's about a 266 Mb download :(.

Alrighty! I guess this marks the end of Spyware in my laptop and thanks for all the help. Eventually my com will be less vulnerable to such nonsense after i get my SP2 and its relevant updates up and going!

Cheers!

While Firefox is almost level with Opera on security, Opera isn't a high target for hackers at the moment, they're all targeting Firefox.

Opera's RSS feed reader and integrated e-mail make it a nice browser =]
