Exactly the same for me, previously it was Winamp which is well over ten years ago now, hard to believe I've used Peter's gem foobar2000 for so many years and I've never as of yet found any worthy contender to it and doubt I ever will as long as he develops it.
foobar2000 is so good for what it plays right "out-of-the-box"! The only other playback plugin I've ever added to it was one for Dolby Digital .AC3 audio since I edit allot of videos and via foobar2000 it makes it so very easy to tell if an edit I made will be gapless or not.

VLC is ugly, but it plays 1 or 2 that almost every other multi-mutimedia player struggles to play. So I have to use it sometimes.
I cringe when I have to use it, but... it does the job!

MPC HC for video and Foobar2000 for audio.
Audacity for editing audio, which I don't do so often.

I'm a sucker for the Zune Software, it's eyecandy. The precursor to the Metro UI, I suppose.

Though there were a few others that worked reasonably well, I ended up dumping GOM player for same reason as the rest.
I also dumped Xion, Foobar, Real, Quicktime, & many others in favor of true multi-media players.

Thing is Foobar2000 is just an audio player, which has its merits if for instance you want fantastic playists, ease of editing metatags, and don't want some bloated multimedia player will all those plugins loaded just to listen to your music.

As I also hate bloat & love ease of use, I caused KMP to save settings to .ini (portable) & to always load a skin I selected, centered on the screen.
It's far smaller than the default KMP skin, & much cleaner. By always loading center, it avoids that video gets "lost" off the edges of the screen.
I have a second skin I can right-click & switch to that has 1-click saving of audio from audio files, video from video files, etc.
This works great.
