Technical
I'm using CCleaner for years. The latest version that works in my computer is CCleaner 3.15.1643. All 3.17 ones are crashing even before I can check the option to send the report. I've thought it was due to the CCEnhancer, but I've uninstalled both and install CCleaner from scratch. No luck. If I return back to 3.15, it works. How to troubleshoot? Windows 7 Pro 32 bits and avast! Internet Security
nodles
Do you get any error messages? Have you tried the portable version?
Technical
Well, I've got the error message (screenshot) that I've tried to upload, but, for some reason, it is not shown here. I'll try the portable.
Moderators hazelnut Posted April 23, 2012 Moderators Share Posted April 23, 2012 Make sure you press the 'more reply options' button in order to get to the post page where you can use the forum uploader. If that one doesn't work just switch to the basic uploader listed there Support contact https://support.ccleaner.com/s/contact-form?language=en_US&form=general or support@ccleaner.com

Technical
The portable version seems to work perfectly. 3.17.1689 Portable version.

If I return back to 3.15, it works. With CCleaner you originally used CCEnhancer, which I believe supplements WinApp2.ini. Question When CCEnhancer was absent but you had no luck with a Fresh install of CCleaner, was this with or without WinApp2.ini. Comment I like Portable and distrust the registry. Even when an application is coded perfectly Microsoft can still cripple write/delete access to vital registry keys, and a clean install may suffer from registry keys that are frozen with bad values. When you add CCEnhancer into the mix you possibly have a lot more Registry Keys that are no longer under your application control. I could comment further - but I will restrain myself
Technical
When CCEnhancer was absent but you had no luck with a Fresh install of CCleaner, was this with or without WinApp2.ini. Without it. I've uninstall it using Revo Uninstaller. The "leftovers" of CCEnhancer were removed (and the folder itself) by Revo. Even when an application is coded perfectly Microsoft can still cripple write/delete access to vital registry keys, and a clean install may suffer from registry keys that are frozen with bad values. When you add CCEnhancer into the mix you possibly have a lot more Registry Keys that are no longer under your application control. Ok, but the problem is the file cleaner, not the registry one Thanks for the support and interest.
Alan_B
Ok, but the problem is the file cleaner, not the registry one Sorry but that is not the issue. It is not related to whether you are cleaning the registry with CCleaner, or running Office Excel spreadsheets. The issue is that truly portable software is controlled by the user and by associated files including an INI configuration file. when truly portable software is deleted and then downloaded, almost everything is exactly as it should be for a fresh start. Installed software is a different brute. Even with RevoUninstaller you are not guaranteed success. Upon un-installation all relevant registry keys SHOULD be removed so a subsequent fresh installation is indeed fresh and perfect, but if Microsoft has frozen the keys with bad values a fresh installation will still use bad corrupt keys and the application will be just as defective as before. Some years ago I tried to update my Software Firewall, but it broke and I had to restore my system from the backup I had prepared "just-in-case". The problem was that old registry keys that had to be re-written were protected from writing. and could not be deleted. RegEdit was unable to "Take Ownership" etc or give me any help. I eventually developed a special "Registry Hive Chainsaw" and chopped out 2000 registry keys. N.B. RegEdit did tell me the truth, that the keys were not accessible. Other third party tools accepted my command to delete the keys and they signaled success, but they had actually failed. Perhaps RevoUninstaller has similarly told your operating system to delete the keys and failed to confirm compliance. This sort of frozen registry key problem is rare, but it does happen. Using Portable CCleaner is a very easy way of avoiding such problems because it is NOT controlled by the registry, therefore a fresh unzip is not vulnerable to registry corruption. In your case Portable CCleaner is working and this suggests ( but does not prove ) that something bad is stuck in your registry.
Technical
Well, can I know which are the master key (folders) created by CCleaner in the registry? I can use the old and good Registrar Lite to take ownership of any key in the registry and delete them. I didn't know that CCleaner go so deeply in the registry like that. Alan_B
No, you do not need to take ownership due to CCleaner digging deep into the registry, but you MAY need to undo something bad that the operating system has done to the registry. Whilst it is much easier to use Registrar Lite instead of RegEdit, and you may be successful :- The problem could be elsewhere ; It might be unsafe for you to destroy keys that you are given on a forum ; I would not want to be responsible for given bad information ; I do not know because I use Portable software whenever possible. Technical
Thanks Alan, but as you know, Windows Registry is very big... If I don't know which keys should I look for, I have nothing to do...
Alan_B
I do not want the responsibility, and I never told you this Use Regshot to observe what happens to the registry as you install CCleaner and then CCEnhancer That will show who adds what keys and where, though it may fail to detect any keys that already exist because they are frozen. Then use RevoUninstaller and closely observe what registry keys it reports. This gives you two different starting points for "stabbing in the dark". My favorite tool for searching the registry is RegScan from Nirsoft. My all-time favorite tool for everything is a Macrium Reflect Boot Recovery CD and a current image of partition C:\ I hope you too are disaster proof. Guest MrT
Technical, I noticed that you are using Brazilian Portuguese language in CCleaner. When cleaning/analyzing cache for Firefox, Thunderbird and/or Chrome, make sure they are closed or allow CCleaner to close them. If you don't close you might crash as there is a bug in the Brazilian Portuguese "skipped" string translation. We are looking into this issue for next release. You can also switch to English language until the problem is fixed. Note: This can also be a problem with Finish, Indonesian and Ukrainian languages. Technical
MrT, many thanks. It was exactly like you've said. I've installed CCleaner 3.18 few moments before you've posted. It crashed. I was about to uninstall it and read your post. Change the language and it worked! Indeed I have Firefox and Chrome processes running in background and set CCleaner to don't close them.
