Have you tried rebuilding the icon cache?

This could be the work of a virus or a damaged registry entry. Consider doing a virus scan or doing system restore.
I love computer maintenance tasks.
Some of my favorite programs:
Wordpad -basic word processing
Notepad - temporary clipboard and basic scripting module
Windows Media Player 12- video, music and online radio player
Windows Media Center - live TV, local FM radio
CCleaner- handy computer maintenance tool

If something fails to work after using the registry cleaner, use SYSTEM RESTORE.

Can you just manually edit them back to what they should be?

What operating system?

Are all your virus/malware scans up to date and clean?

Are there any errors that could be connected showing up in the windows event viewer?

Did you install or uninstall any software just before this started to happen?

Are you running Vista? Have a look at these articles ... http://www.vistax64.com/vista-general/1058...lder-icons.html and ... http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/90705-pe...ll-folders.html

It's a very good idea to always back up the registry with something like ERUNT before you mess around with it.

@hazelnut
I'm using windows vista basic and all scans from my malware scanners are clean(i use ZA Secuirty Suite as my main scanner and active protection and malwarebytes as a second line of defense) ..windows event viewer seemed ok..i just reinstalled my anti-virus scanners particularly ZA Security Suite..

@marmite
thanks for the links :) i'll look unto it :)

qwerty77 just putting BUMP in posts isn't really considered good forums etiquette.

It looks like we have made quite a few suggestions that unfortunately don't work for you.

If no one else has anymore ideas it may be time to post on a dedicated vista forum perhaps?
