Long time no see...

Having major major problems with a brand new laptop, running XP Pro: My desktop icons and start menu etc have disappeared, all I have is the wallpaper. The Windows TweakUI doesn't work. I heard that SBC had said their DSL installation disk can cause it, so I phoned and they said it should be compatible.

I bought the laptop on Sunday and had the problem immediately after installing DSL and updating Norton AV (it came pre-installed as a 60-day trial). So I took it back and they replaced it (no refunds for opened products), same model, paid extra to have them install spyware programs and do the Norton updates. Started out fine. Switched it off, switched it back on an hour later, and again all the icons and start menu and taskbar dispappeared.

On my last laptop I had the Aurora virus, got rid of it thanks to rridgely, then 2 weeks later it died, we think it was due to major overheating, the hard drive was fine.

So can you have a look to see if there are any anomalies in this log please? I have SpySweeper, it picked up nothing.

I dont see anything in your log that would cause this problem. Try booting to safe mode and see if your icons load.

Fixed it. Thanks to coolpro2 at the forum at www.theeldergeek.com who suggested it might be Visual IPInsight which is installed during the installation of SBC DSL.

Reboot to safe mode, go to add/remove programs and remove Visual IPInsight. Reboot in normal mode. Works for me.

Thats good, I was curious if your icons and such would work in safe mode. If they did my next suggestion would have been to kill all of the processes that come from your dsl.

At least you got it fixed.
