im new here and this is what happen

i have used ccleaner and loved it
today i used defraggler

i had 18gb of used space in my hard drive

i ran the full defraggles and now it says i have 22.5gb of used space

WHY IS THIS
I HAVE NO SYSTEM RESTORE POINTS

WHAT SHALL I DO ??/
IS THIS PROGRAM FAULTY OR AM I DOING SOMETHING WRONG ????

CAN U PLEZ HELP ME

Do you have Vista?

If so, it's to do with Vista's Volume Shadow Copy and System Restore, and there's an attempt at an explanation here using examples from the web and previous Defraggler topics on the subject.

Well this is most likely some sort of a Vista bug. It's a known problem and CCleaner unveiled it. Here's an article about it: http://www.mydigitallife.info/2008/02/26/h...space-in-vista/

Hi Krisshp.

Have a look on your computer for how many Volume Shadow Copy files you have, and see if you can delete some or all of them. This may help.

Vista by default reserves 15% of disk space for defragging.

As Volume Shadow Copy takes up more and more space as you defrag, or do other stuff that makes Vista track changes to files, then to retain that 15% Vista starts to delete System Restore points. This is probably why you don't have any.

So you have the situation it seems where your available free space can seem to disappear, and along with it, as the process continues, your System Restore Points.

Again, I don't have Vista, so can't physically check this process, but the only way it seems to get back your free space, is to delete Volume Shadow Copies.

And maybe we can get some input from Vista users on here who have practical experience of this, and could possibly give you clearer instructions on the "how to".

Maybe a "stupid" question but don't you have a 40 GB hard drive wich has now 17,5GB of used space and 22,5GB of unused space? (The 0,5 GB extra could have been freed from the defragging)

Is it a safe thing to? I would say yes.

Is it a desirable thing to do? That's the debatable point. If your free space is disappearing, I believe this is probably the only way to gain it back.

Be aware that deleting Shadow copies also deletes Restore Points, but you don't have to delete them all. See how many you have listed, and maybe delete all but the most recent one or two.

With System Restore, you don't IMHO want to go back too far anyway.

I'll also add that I don't have Vista, and this information is based upon research and many previous topics on this and other forums.
