As many of you probably already know, Firefox 3 changed the way that bookmarks are handled. I discovered this when I noticed that my bookmarks.html file date never changed after upgrading to version 3. Instead, bookmarks are now saved to a file called "places.sqlite".

According to this site:

the best way to handle Firefox bookmarks is to install the Sqlite Manager:

Another alternative is found here:

You can sync places.sqlite and bookmarks.html by typing "about:config", search for "browser.bookmarks.autoExportHTML", change its value to "true"

The only reason I can see the use of the latter method is if you want to import or export your bookmarks from bookmarks.html rather than places.sqlite or
you want to be able to open the bookmarks.html file in a browser or other reader.

I'm not sure why they changed their method. One poster's comments on the first link above gave me a good chuckle when he stated that:

It’s obvious that the real reason that Mozilla put in a database engine to handle the bookmarks is because some nerd at Mozilla was either taking a SQL class or needed to add SQL to his resume.

The way the bookmarks are handled now already bit me on the bum earlier this year with me thinking my batch file had backed up everything, but it didn't as my bookmarks were months out of date.

I now use FEBE to make sure I have a known good Firefox profile backup, and I manually export my bookmarks to an HTML file in My Documents just to make sure the fiasco from earlier this year is completely avoided.
Complexity of incoherent design.

Is FEBE an add-on that backs up your files by uploading them or can you back up to your hard drive.
I checked out the Thunderbird link and Zone Alarm blocked Box.net as spyware. Does FEBE use Box.net in any way?

I found this cached post from ZoneAlarm discussing malware hosted by Box.net :

and this odd post about Box.net that goes off in all directions (this was the best Yahoo answer yet! :

Are you all saying that MozBackup won't work now? I make a new copy about weekly and store it "up" at SkyDrive. So if these Ff backup progs do still work, what is the concern?

I don't use the online backup with FEBE, instead I have it save directly to my second hard disk.
Complexity of incoherent design.

I use Xmarks, which used to be Foxmarks.Xmarks main site. Very handy to sync multiple computers with the same bookmarks.
