Very bizarre problem with startup programs... (I don't think it's a bug)

Hello,

First off, I'd like to say that I've been using CCleaner for roughly a year now and I love it. Recently, however, CCleaner has been forcefully disabling programs meant to run at startup without my control. I have tested this problem very thoroughly, and I'm 100% sure CCleaner is related to the problem. I believe it all begins with CCleaner's list of startup items. Two programs in particular (Steam and Rocket Dock) do not show up in its list of programs it allows to start once Windows starts; they do, however, appear in the list of start up items when running "msconfig". CCleaner, for some reason, seems to completely override msconfig.

To test if it was absolutely CCleaner, I uninstalled the program and restart my computer; alas, both Steam and Rocket Dock appeared once the welcome screen faded. I tried reinstalling CCleaner to see if it was just a hiccup with the program and noticed it actually unchecked the "Run at Windows Startup" boxes in both programs after it had installed again (rechecking them and restarting changes nothing). Also, to make sure it was not a recent version, I downloaded a much earlier version (1.3X, or something of that nature) and the issue persisted.

Has this issue ever been documented before? Is there any known solution? I would love to continue using CCleaner, but if this is a problem that is going to continue I really have no choice but to keep it uninstalled. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: Oops, the title is meant to be "Very bizarre problem with startup PROGRAMS...". Fell asleep at the wheel there.

Hi Joobapalooza, and welcome to Piriform.

I can't see how CCleaner would do that without it being manually setup to do so, and I've never seen that particular problem mentioned before. Does anyone else use the computer?

All I can think is that you may somehow have these options/settings saved to a CCleaner.ini file in CCleaners Programs Folder. Although if you uninstalled, it shouldn't be there.

Might be worth a look at "CCleaner\Options\Advanced" to see if the "save settings to ini file" is checked, and maybe have a look in CCleaners folder.

Hello. Have you tryed down grading to an older version that you knew worked fine?

For ccleaner to disable an entry on startup this would have to be coded into the application load event. and i cant see any reason why this would be as its not needed.

I've got exactly the same problem as this. It's also affecting filehippo on startup, too, and is driving me crazy.

Version 2.19.901 is the latest version I can find that doesn't have the problem. Hope that helps.

Joobapalooza, can you confirm that using 2.19 fixes this issue for you?

Hi there,

I should have replied to this message earlier, but I've been quite busy. I've still been getting the same problems with Steam and filehippo. It looked like using an earlier version was working, but it actually hasn't been.

Hi,

I installed RocketDock and can not reproduce this issue. Everything works as expected.

There is no way CCleaner could cause this problem. You must have something else going on.

I have attached a snapshot of my XP machine with RocketDock installed and latest CCleaner.

You might need to provide more info so the devs could help you.

It certainly seems to have started when I installed the newest version of CCleaner, at that time. Perhaps there was an update to some other software I'm using at the same time, as I've noticed over the past few weeks that even when I don't use CCleaner, Steam, filehippo, and Creative still won't load on startup. I'm completely stumped.

After much faffing around I think I might have spotted a contributing factor to the problem.

I recently disabled the sidebar for Google Desktop, and now whenever I run CCleaner everything seems to be fine. It's not deleting the 'start when windows does' ticks in Steam, and other progs anymore.

Thanks for posting back what appears to be a solution for you. It may help others.
