I used CCleaner on my C: drive last week. Backed up the registry. I rebooted when it was finished and the pc just goes into boot cycle. It gets to the windows splash screen then reboots. Ive tried starting in safe mode, safe with networking, lofgging, etc and same result.
I have an empty partition D: on my hard drive that I loaded Windows onto to get access to the pc. I believe when I cleaned the registry on C: it got messed up. How do I restore the registry on C with the backup from C: while logged in to the OS on D:?

Hi calcorn, and welcome to Piriform.
Sorry to hear of your problem.
Using Windows Explorer on your D drive, can you access your C drive? Is it showing up as another drive?
If so, navigate to where you saved the reg backup. If you didn't stipulate a location the default one is "My Documents", and the file will look like this: "cc_20090112_030538.reg", with the first numbers being the date.
If you have "Hide Extensions For Known File Types" selected in your folder options, the .reg part won't be visible.
Either double click the file or right click and select "merge" to reintroduce the backup into the registry.
If you can't carry out the above, post back as there are other options, but this seems to be the simplest under your circumstances. Although accessing your C drive from your D is a new one to me.

I have full access to the drives when logged into the OS on D: I can see all the windows files and everything. When I boot the PC I get a message asking which OS to boot from. The one on D is the only one that works at the moment. When i try to boot from the OS on C it just cycles.
I saved the backup of the registry on the desktop of C:, (pre-crash) which I can drill down to the desktop folder with explorer. My concern is that if I click and merge the backup of the registry on the desktop of C: it will merge it to the registry on D: and not the registry on C: which is the one that is corrupted.

Could I do this?
Go into the C:/Windows/system32/regedit. Open the registry editor there and import the backup from the desktop of C:

Your situation is an unknown one for me, so I can't say definitively that the backup would merge into the C: registry, but I can't see why it wouldn't.
I don't think it would direct itself to an external drive named something other than C:
Regarding your question, again, I can't see why that wouldn't work.

Thanks for the help dennis, I think im not explaining the problem right though.
My hard drive is partitioned C: (windows)
D: (empty)
E: (Downloads)
I used CCleaner last week on C: and backup-ed the registry and cleaned it.
When i went to restart it just cycled.
I loaded Windows xp on the empty D: partition
The PC starts ok when booted from the second install of the OS on D: But will not start when booted from the OS on C:
When I do Start-> regedit it appears its displaying the registry on D: I need a way to access the registry on C: So I can restore the backup

You explained it well, but I have no experience of using two Operating Systems side by side like that.
Another option, if you can work it, is to download Paragon Free Rescue Kit from this link and make a bootable Rescue CD.
http://www.paragon-s...ome/rk-express/
If you can burn the Image File (ISO) to a CD, you can boot with it and access you're C: drive directly without bringing your D: drive into the equation.
The easiest way to use this is to extract the Image File from the downloaded exe file, and burn that Image to a CD using a freeware program like Ashampoo or ImgBurn.
If you need more details about doing this, post back and I'll go into more detail.
This is assuming you don't already have some form of bootable rescue CD.
