Hi to All

For some time now, one of the icons in my system tray disappears after every clean, namely
my printer icon, the strange thing is it's the only one that does, anyway I've now managed
to narrow the culprit down to CC, however it seems the cleaner is removing it, as on one
clean I had no registry issues, but it still disappeared on reboot.

Most of the time I appreciate what CC does, as I've been using it since almost day one,
but on this occasion it's gone a bit OTT.

All help appreciated.

Now don't go blaming CC for this problem. There will be millions of CC users that don't have this, me for one.

You haven't given us any system spec, operating system with service pack number. Which version of CC? Printer make and model. Is it Networked, how many printers do you have?

Have you changed any settings in your printer properties?

Have you Googled for this problem. There are loads of answers.

Have you tried to open CC, goto the cleaner section. Advanced tab. Uncheck "Tray Notifications Cache"? If that option is checked it will remove some icons that appear in the system tray. Like your printer

Tray Notifications Cache I don't see that in my Advanced options. In fact I don't remember seeing it in any version of CC that I've used.

Hi, ade1952. Welcome.

Just a maybe, but if your printer is off when you restart, and CCleaner runs at startup, CCleaner might be finding what appears to be an erroneous entry.

In CCleaner v. 2.22.968, in the "Cleaner" section:
In the "Advanced" section, there is a "Tray Notifications Cache" option.
Try unchecking it before the next restart.

Keithuk, mine isn't a tab either, it is an option under the "Windows" tab.

In the "System" section, there are "Start Menu Shortcuts" and "Desktop Shortcuts" options.
You might need to uncheck them also.

I can't check it, so please post back if it works.

Thanks for the replies,

I've tried the suggestion and unchecked the Tray Notifications Cache, but no joy.

If it might help, my system is XP with SP3 I have one printer an Epson R285
and CC is Version 222 the latest I believe.

Is the icon related to the Epson printer software? If so, I suspect that the app is putting a file in one of the temp folders or an entry in a registry key cleaned by CCleaner.

Here it is - 4 times over in the hope that one of them can display.

If I cannot see them in Firefox I will be back with the 1000 words a picture is worth ! !

OOPS Only 3 - this website refused a TIF image.
What I can now see, from left to right, are GIF, PNG, and JPG
n.b. the JPG was correctly aligned when it left my P.C. ! !

Yes I see it now. Its greyed out because I don't have it selected. When he was talking about Advanced I thought of Options/Advanced.

Problem solved, it was in fact a tmp file in my “local settings folder”, so I've put it in CCs
exclusions list, tested it and it's still there after a reboot.

So although CC was removing the file, it's due to bad file naming on the part of Epson, that's
I see it anyway, surely they must realise that users clean their systems, so to put a facility
into their software, that enables users to monitor their printers from the system tray, but
have it as temporary file, seems a complete contradiction.

Anyway thanks for all the help everyone most appreciated.

Epson have absolutely no excuse.

They were making printers before there was DOS.
Deluxe DOS machines used a 1 Mbyte memory card, and Bill Gates said no one can use more than 640 KByte,
so the first thing every one did was to use the spare 360 KBytes as TEMP.

Upon reboot TEMP never remembered what was there yesterday, but could have random garbage.
So Autoexec.bat always cleared TEMP on startup.

No one expected TEMP to be permanent;
except Epson whose designers apparently clear their memories everytime they wake up ! !

Thanks for the reply,

I have to bow to your superior knowledge and technical prowess, and have to
say, that the dear old days of DOS, are just a history lesson to me every time I'm
informed of such matters, it's not that I'm to young to remember (mores the
pity), it's just that I really didn't wake up to Windows until Windows 95, so
I'm one of the point and click brigade, and for the most part DOS leaves me very
confused..

Anyway it boils down to Epson changing their approach, and putting such files
in their main program folder, perhaps?
