As many others have experienced, I found that CCleaner was deleting my User Preferences for WinZip. I kept trying to set the default location for extracting files or creating new archives to be the current folder. But everytime I ran CCleaner, it cut those preferences, and WinZip returned to its defaults.

I searched this site for a solution, but while I found bits and pieces that led me to the answer, I never found a single, clear-cut explanation about how to fix the problem. So, for better or worse, here's my stab at explaining how to stop CCleaner from deleting your WinZip preferences.

  • In CCleaner on the left side, click on the "Options" button, the click on "Exclude"
  • On the right side of the Exclude window, click on "Add Registry"
  • In the "Registry" form, click on the dropdown and select "HKCU"
  • In the text box to the right of the drop down, type or paste the following (without the quotation marks):
    "\Software\Nico Mak Computing\"
That fixed my problem. I hope it can help you with yours.

Hi N.C., and welcome to Piriform.

I'm not a user of WinZip, so can't benefit from your tip, but I'm sure there will be users who appreciate you taking the time and trouble to register with Piriform to pass on that information.
:)

It would also be a good ideal to export your WinZip settings to say My Documents, then save them for the future should you reinstall, etc., or if any other tool wipes the settings you could always just import them.
Complexity of incoherent design.
