Before cleaning my registry I took a backup as advised. I now want to restore the backup and have followed the FAQ advice of right clicking and selecting merge. Windows then says Cannot import: Error accessing the registry. Does anyone know how to fix this?

I'm not too certain of this, but it could be a "permissions" issue. Are you logged into the same account as when the backup was made, or logged on as administrator?
And you could have a try at merging the entries in "safe mode". Other than that, I'm still having a look around on this one, but one of the other guys may have something better.

Are using XP?
Have you tried doing start>run and typing regedit into the box and pressing okay.
Then when it opens do file>import and browse to your backup.
I presume the backup was the ccleaner one offered to you when you used the reg cleaner (issues)?
Did you change the name on it at all, as it has to end in .reg.
Also have a look here in case your .reg associations are mixed up.

Thanks for the advice. The problem has gone away without needing to restore the backup, so I haven't followed up on these suggestions. What I also discovered in this process is that ccleaner removes system restore points - which I see has been a seperate and long discussion on this bulletin board.
