There is no such thing as a safe browser.
IE is no worse than Firefox and Firefox has its vulnerabilities.
- Install SpywareBlaster and update it regularly http://www.javacools...areblaster.html
- Use an anti virus application like avast! or Avira AntiVir plus keep them up to date
- Use a site notification tool like McAfee SiteAdvisor http://www.siteadvisor.com
- Enable IE7 security by reviewing information http://technet.micro...y/cc512583.aspx
- Use a HOSTS file to block known bad sites
I use hpHosts and MVPS HOSTS files:
http://www.mvps.org/...p2002/hosts.htm <== has a good description of the HOSTS file and its use
I manage them with HostsMan and I use its HostsServer proxy to speed up browsing:

Do not use P2P ( file sharing ) applications as they are a favorite vehicle for malware writers.
Do not download videos promising explicit views or special features

As I mentioned in another thread here...yes. You can use both FF and Opera on the same computer without conflicts.
