Trojans, trojans everywhere!

If someone can take a look at these and see if I'm good to go, or if not, what I need to do next, that would be great! Thanks so much!

Edit: Let me explain the issues I've had. The past few days I've noticed Norton coming up with a warning of a trojan virus -- Trojan.fakeavalert. These have popped up a few times randomly for the past couple of days (after figuring out that my loving husband tried to get on a wonderful site). I've generally been ignoring them, running antivirus (which has seemed to do nothing), and not doing what it's suggested I do (ie reboot, etc). The only thing out of the ordinary that it has done has been to lock the task manager option, which I figured out how to unlock (not problem anymore). After running all of the programs below, the only issue I have now is that internet add-ons are disabled, but am assuming that restarting the computer may solve that. No major issues otherwise, just paranoid that my hard drive will crash or something similar.

Hello persinger20,

Before we start fixing anything you should print out these instructions or copy them to a NotePad file so they will be accessible. Some steps will require you to disconnect from the Internet or use Safe Mode and you will not have access to this page.

Please download SDFix by AndyManchesta and save it to your desktop.
When using this tool, you must use the Administrator's account or an account with "Administrative rights"
  • Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
  • (this is the drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix).
  • DO NOT use it just yet.
Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Open the SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services or Registry Entries found then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts, the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt in your next replyalong with a new HijackThis log.

Please go to Start Menu > Run > and copy/paste the following line:
%systemdrive%\SDFix\apps\swreg IMPORT %systemdrive%\SDFix\apps\Enable_Command_Prompt.reg
Press Ok and then run SDFix again.

-- If the Command Prompt window flashes on then off again on XP or Win 2000, please go to Start Menu > Run > and copy/paste the following line:
%systemdrive%\SDFix\apps\FixPath.exe /Q
Reboot and then run SDFix again.

-- If SDFix still does not run, check the %comspec% variable. Right-click My Computer > click Properties > Advanced > Environment Variables and check that the ComSpec variable points to cmd.exe.

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.


  • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report

Yes, we can definitely use a different program.

Before we start fixing anything you should print out these instructions or copy them to a NotePad file so they will be accessible. Some steps will require you to disconnect from the Internet or use Safe Mode and you will not have access to this page.

Please download DrWeb-CureIt and save it to your desktop. DO NOT perform a scan yet.

Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Scan with Dr.Web CureIt as follows:
  • Double-click on launch.exe to start the program.
  • Cancel any prompts to download the latest CureIt version and click Start.
  • At the prompt to "Start scan now", click Ok. Allow the setup.exe/driver to load if asked by any of your security programs.
  • The Express scan will automatically begin.
    (This is a short scan of files currently running in memory, boot sectors, and targeted folders).
  • If an infected object is found, you will be prompted to move anything that cannot be cured. Click Yes to All.
  • When complete, click Select All, then choose Cure > Move incurable.
    (This will move any detected files to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofile\DoctorWeb\Quarantine folder if they can't be cured)
  • Now put a check next to Complete scan to scan all local disks and removable media.
  • In the top menu, click Settings > Change settings, and UNcheck "Heuristic analysis" under the "Scanning" tab, then click Ok.
  • Back at the main window, click the green arrow "Start Scanning" button on the right under the Dr.Web logo.
  • When the scan is complete, a message will be displayed at the bottom indicating if any viruses were found.
  • Click "Yes to all" if asked to cure or move the file(s) and select "Move incurable".
  • In the top menu, click file and choose save report list.
  • Save the DrWeb.csv report to your desktop.
  • Exit Dr.Web Cureit when done.
  • Important! Reboot your computer because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web in your next reply. (You can use Notepad to open the DrWeb.cvs report)

Computer seems to run a bit faster/better after the scan with DrWeb; I'll still get notices from Norton about Tracking Cookies every so often, but not like it was. And still having issues with graphics bluring or not being all there and drop downs coming down on some sites.

Tracking cookies aren't something you really need to worry about either, you'll always get them in one form or another. The graphical bluring sounds like a hardware issues/graphics driver problem. Did this issue start after your computer was infected with malware, or before it?

It started after I started running the programs you had suggested to rid the Trojans. I'm wondering if the malware had infected the video drivers? I thought I had remembered seeing one come up that was in the sound, but cant remember.

Perhaps it's not a bad idea to try reinstalling those video drivers, do you know which ones you need to try reinstalling?

Hello persinger20,

Do you know if you're running an ATI or Nvida type video card? If you don't we can just try this a simpler way, go to this site and click the Download link to download a program called Everest. Once downloaded go ahead and install it, after that when it's been opened on the left side there should be a menu. On that menu there should be a tab called "Display." After that on the right hand side there should be some further options for you to choose from. click on the one that says "PCI / AGP Video." Then tell me what it lists for your video card device(s).

On a suggestion from Hazelnut we'll do this a much easier way.. Open up CCleaner, at the top, right under the name it lists the critical system overview. Please reply with what it lists for the last part, the video card device.

Try going to this website, and then select the appropriate options based on the information in your last post. After that download and install the drivers, reboot, and let me know if it changed the situation in any way.
