Well, I've tried TM Internet Pro with mixed results (still had phantom popups). At least MBAM caught what (I hope) was the svchost process that kept respawning. I would appreciate your advice on the following.

Hello MacDaddy,

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingc...to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New HijackThis log.

Thanks for the help. I ran CombFix (bu the way, TM thinks the bleepingcomputer site is malicous) and have the logs attached. I had shut down TM, but when ComboFix rebooted it was still active. I don't think it hurt the scan, but wanted you to be aware as you investigate. Thanks again and here are the logs:

Hello MacDaddy,

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Quote

Driver::
RpcSsd
SjyPkt
Rootkit::
C:\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\SjyPkt.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\RpcSq.exe
File::
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\kdfinj.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\kdfmgr.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\kdfvmgr.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\kdfapi.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\Kdfhok.dll
C:\WINDOWS\DCEBoot.exe
DirLook::
C:\WINDOWS\kdefense

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Posted Image

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

Thanks again for your time and consideration. Attached is the log file from the latest ComboFix run. Upon dragging and dropping the CSFScript file onto the ComboFix application, I was informed that a new version of ComboFix was available and prompted to upgrade. I accepted the upgrade and the scan continued and seemed normal.

It appears to have found two infections - one DNSChanger and one Rootkit. Both were classified as Latent. Here is the complete ActiveScanlog:

Thanks again for your help and hello from inside hurricane Ike. So far, my PC seems to be running much better than the weather. I have noticed on a few occasions when shutting down IE that it will hang and trigger a Windows Error. Otherwise all seems well. Here is the latest HJT log. Let me know if I need anything else.

Hello MacDaddy,

Your logs look fine, just one last thing I'd like to check out.

  • Please go to VirSCAN.org FREE on-line scan service
  • Copy and paste the following file path into the "Suspicious files to scan"box on the top of the page:

    • C:\WINDOWS\kdefense\k52012.bmp

  • Click on the Upload button
  • Once the Scan is completed, click on the "Copy to Clipboard" button. This will copy the link of the report into the Clipboard.
  • Paste the contents of the Clipboard in your next reply.

Thanks again for your help. Sorry for the delayed response. Things have been a little distracted around here trying to pick up after Ike. It appears that nothing was found with the scan. Here is the log:

Hello MacDaddy,

Things have been a little distracted around here trying to pick up after Ike.
I hope you weren't anywhere near the center of that disastrous storm. Hopefully it didn't cause too much for you to fix up afterwards.

Your logs look good, if your computer is running good now let me know and we'll finish up here.

Thanks for your help. My PC seems in top shape now. Amazing that your team can diagnose such obscure problems from a distance.

Ike came right through my neighborhood. We were inland, but the eye wall came within 2 miles of my house. While damage was moderate, I feel fortunate. At one point there were 18 people in my house. At least now it is down to two families.

I think we can now close this issue.

Hello MacDaddy,

I just have a few last tips for you before you ago.

Time for some housekeeping

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer against malware infections.

* Keep Windows updated by regularly checking their website at :
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.

* To reduce re-infection for malware in the future, I strongly recommend installing these free programs:

SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX
IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all
Have a look at this tutorial for IE-Spyad here

* SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts. Make sure you are only running one real-time anti-spyware protection program or there will be a conflict.

Make Internet Explorer more secure
  • Click Start > Run
  • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
  • Click on the Security tab
  • Click Reset all zones to default level
  • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
  • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
  • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

* MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.

* Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more
secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in pop up
blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from
Here

* Take a good look at the following suggestions for malware prevention by reading Tony Klein’s article 'How Did I Get Infected In The First Place'
Here

Thank you for your patience, and performing all of the procedures requested.
